I was in the Air Force in the 1968 Olympic Year. At a training Base you were required to try out for the Squadron boxing team. In my Squadron, there was one guy from Detroit who looked like Joe Louis, and a Pennsylvania coal******* who had no vowels in his name. Now those guys could fight. After my 2 bouts against equal limited competition, I decided to let The Brown Bomber and Zglweiz take on the Ruskies by themselves.
I still box as an amateur. 19 wins 2 losses. Don't have a lot of power and a little afraid to get hurt/hit sometimes, I'm a real runner like Floyd but it gives me wins and I score points And besides, it's the ams right? O btw I'm a light-welter.
I got tought to box a age 5 my dad was a trainier but never wanted me to fight. Managed to get carded when I was 17 but broke my hand fighting else were and started living a bit wild. Still training and sparring 30 years later even coaching at the local gym. My advice to any younger members wanting to fight get your head down and dont waste the chance. Not boxing in the ring is my only regret in life. :good
I dont think so. Boxing is a sub culture sport now-a-days. I would bet that about 65% to 80% of the guys here have indeed had some amatuer fights or at least trained. Its like motorcycle racing, even one that I have ever meet that enjoys the sport has at one point done it, and still own several bikes. Boxing is like that now..... I had a pretty long amatuer career, from age six to 18 at which point I had to give up boxing to chace my dream of playing in the NFL. Which meant that I had to get bigger so there when boxing.
Only at amateur level, decided to concentrate on Shotokan Karate (I just happen to be better at it) still do a bit of sparring now and again!
To be honest the worst for me was watching my little brother go in, at least when its you you have the adrenalin pumping and can do something to protect yourself but watching my kid brother climbing the steps , sh*t man , my heart was in my mouth.
