Gomez can fight. He moves well, has good hand speed, and good accuracy. Gomez is the best counter puncher in the heavyweight division today, and can score clean shots that will produce knockdowns with either the hook or right hand.

In my opinion Gomez best compares to a bigger / more in shape version of James Toney.

Vitali will need to double up on his jab, and throw some lead rights.

Like that time when he got thrashed by Yanki Diaz?

Yes--Gomez was caught by a well-placed hook, and lost. I would not necessarily say Gomez has a bad chin because he took some shots from a hard puncher in Virchis and without any noticeable signs of distress. Gomez is very under rated.

agree with this thread and if you look at my posts from a few weeks back we are saying almost the same thing. Gomez fights a little like Toney cause he can use the philly shell defence and the way he dodges and slips, and also a little like Byrd the way he catches punches with his gloves. His hand speed and upper body speed are very good.

The thing about Gomez is he has no power.

As for his chin maybe when he got KO'd by Diaz he wasn't yet accustomed to the heavyweight division.

    Gomez really is underrated.

He looked fast in the Sinan Samil Sam fight, which is the only one I've saw him, he was just too talented for him. That's really been Juan Carlos Gomez's HBO exposure so far I believe

    Gomez is good BUT...

He is WAY too flatfooted recently. He has given up one of his best attributes. He can't stay in one spot against Vitali or it will be an early night.

One thing: Gomez has to take the GYM seriously. The heavyweight division doesn't mean you need to be a fat ass to fight.

I also notice that whenever Gomez throws a straight left, it looks like he is going to fall forward. he lunges too much which might a problem if he gets tagged with Vitaly straight right counter.

I am rooting for him too. Gomez is a very talented fighter and should be crafty enough to pose Klitschko some problems. Very few guys at this weight know how to counter-punch and move like he does, Eddie Chambers, James Toney, maybe David Haye on a good-day, but no-one else.

JCGomes is a vey good fighter, a top 5 fighter, but the thing is that Vitali is better.

I always felt 5 years ago Gomez would've stood an excellent chance vs. either Klitschkos. And I still like this fight. Gomez was an excellent CW, showed his talent at HW as well, but failed to deliver it to the highest level. What a disappointment his last 5 years were.

At this point, I don't feel his workrate will be high enough to deal with Vitali, who's always on the attack, but not easy counter. I do see Gomez landing several counters, especially the ones Corrie Sanders attempted to land (and landed bigtime in the 1st), but still not enough to overcome Vitali's size and output. What he can't do in 2009, is to stop Vitali coming forward and make it an average paced, close range battle. And backing up all night even someone as good as Gomez can't win.

But, I certainly think that he has the best package of speed, power, offensive and defensive skills of the WBC top15.
