HBO had a vested interested in calzaghe in that fight they'd signed him to a contract recently to broadcast his fights. Watch the countdown show.. it was a joe kissarse fest so was the commentary. Steward especially i quote "yeah but for the knockdown calzaghe controlled the round and probably won the round" priceless. Even if the knockdown didnt happen hopkins landed the only effective punches of the round you couldnt make more stupid comments if you tried

    Do us a favor Chucksfeld....

  5. Outside of the KD i'd have scored it either even or maybe just maybe to Hops - pushing a case for Joe to have won the round outside of the KD is a bit much, Joe was very wary after the KD and it took him until mid way in the 3rd when he started to flow a bit more.

You said some stuff that was complete bull****. Forgive me for not liking how it smells - and then you come back with more weak readjustments to what you intially said? No disrespect, but I don't appreciate that.

If I think someone is an idiot, I say so, sorry that's just my way. For instance, Pugilist64 just said Calzaghe is top 5 of all-time... is it wrong to say that he is a ****ing imbecile? Well I'll happily be in the wrong forevermore then, because some "opinions" are outwith the spectrum of acceptability and respectability.

I can't be bothered with another lengthy reply tonight: Calzaghe's best performance was Lacy and his best win was Kessler. These were achieved in 2006-7, therefore his prime was 2006-7. Very, very simple.

And I don't even need to bother with arguing over Pacquiao being number 1 - because he is. That's not opinion, it's fact, so any debate would be utterly futile and inconsequential. Accept it.

To get back to the thread-subject, I think a placing anywhere between 80 and 130 is acceptable for Joe all things considered. I doubt he would make my own top 100, but as I haven't yet written one, I can't say that for certain. He may make it in when I write it. But anyone saying Calzaghe is in the top 50 is either a biased fanboy with no objectivity or credibility, or a novice fan with very poor knowledge of boxing and of boxing history.

'sean' nobody has replied/responded to your comment about Calzaghe's place in boxing history - i agree with you that in 50 years time, if Calzaghe remains unbeaten, especially if he reaches 50 and 0 he will be seen very favourably.

My first ever boxing thread on a different site was on this theme,{at around the time where Calzaghe had beaten Hopkins and was talking about fighting Jones, Joe at this stage had not relinquished his WBO SMW belt} i stated that if Joe reached 50/0 bettering Marciano's record, smashing the longest reigning champion record and equalling the most title defences ever in the process as well as beating legends Hopkins and Jones, Joe Calzaghe would be perceived as a top ten boxer of all time, i say perceived because you may not think he is a top tenner of all time but PEOPLE IN YEARS TO COME WOULD.
Calzaghe has now lost the chance of being in every boxing record book for the most title defences and being the longest reigning champion ever, but all the same Calzaghe stock if he retires unbeaten will rise and rise as time goes on, this fact is lost on nearly ever poster, they can not see beyond the present.
If Calzaghe retires tomorrow {46-0} i would have him inside the top 50, history in 30 years plus time, will have him a lot higher ?

Incidentally i called the thread 'Joe Calzaghe Throwing Away Greatness' because just like now he was talking about one more fight {Jones} and then retiring, i felt then just like now for him to have a boxing legarcy and for fans to talk about him in 50 years time he needs to get to 50 and 0, it wont matter so much in 50 years time that the greats he beat were at the end of their careers as it seems to now.

I basically agree with this, although I think Pryor rates higher than Calzaghe.

Short of the two body shots and the right hook joe got on the chin, Joe was brilliant in that fight...

And although some people think the stoppage was premature, personally at ringside i didnt think so, but looking at the tape, you can make a case for the ref to let Byron come of the ropes. But overal the 2 rounds were excellent.:deal

Takes a lot of work to come up with a definitive list. My impression right now is that he's on the 75-100 list.
