...and wins, what does this do to both mens legacies? Or is this nothing more than a pantomime fight?
do people take tyson last few fights seriously? or ali? or leonard? this fight is in the same category, only that now it apply to both fighters. faded legend vs almost faded legend
If Jones wins, I think it will add to his already, amazing legacy. Jones has dipped badly over the last few years since he came down from HW, yet Hopkins is still highly regarded and P4P #4 in the Rings yearly ratings, and in some polls the top man at LHW since Calzaghe retired. So if Jones wins he once again has a claim to being the top LHW again all these years later, which would be a great achievement
If that happens and it can happen, Jones will most probably earn another good payday fighting a top fighter in the LHWT Division like Dawson, and to be honest, Jones would fight Dawson whereas Hopkins would probably step up to HW. In terms os legacies, it would reinforce the notion that Jones beats Hopkins anytime anywhere and thusly, deserves to be ranked first in ATGness. That is if he beats Hops this time which I most honestly doubt he will.
I don't think it will mean much, considering how lesser fighters beat Jones, if Hopkins loses it's because he also became shot.
If Jones wins, he's back! It would conclusively prove that the Tarver, Johnson, Calzaghe, and Green losses were all flukes. He would have to be rated a top p4p again. And then he should go after guys like Dawson, and Pascal and maybe move up to heavy again. Oh well back to reality, this fight means nothing, both guys should hang it up after this.
If Jones wins, I think the demons of all those losses (Tarver, Green, Johnson) would be finally put to rest. Beating a Hopkins (who has aged far better), would be a massive win. One of the greatest of his career even.
Other then being the ultimate **** you to hopkins this probably wouldn't change much. Kinda like Camacho beating Duran...didn't really change too much there did it?
If Jones wins, it's huge for him but I don't really think it's improves his historical standing. He's such a shot, beatable fighter now, the focus turns to the guy he beat. The focus turns from "Jones looked good" to "His opponent is terrible". It's why his victories over Lacy and Tito mean nothing, despite them being 'names', because being beaten by this version of Jones says more about how poor they are. If Jones wins, it may prove he can still outbox a good boxer himself, which could be a reference point fir fantasy match-ups. His chin will always be the huge issue but if you can make an argument that Hopkins didn't hit him clean, then you may also say other fighters in history wouldn't land either. Not that it matters - There is only one winner. If Hopkins wins, so what? I'm sure his fans will wax lyrical about it, but in reality, this fight is a disturbing mismatch. It's the fourth best fighter in the world against a guy who was knocked out in one in his last fight, and hasn't done anything meaningful in years.
