Would it really of even mattered? Just another ancient scalp for Moorer, like his win against Holyfield? It wouldn't be as if he beat the Foreman that won a title and redeemed himself, he'd be stopping him from doing so and in the process dropping Foreman's greatness to some degree to boot. Lose lose if you ask me, much like Valuev against Holyfield and similar fights.
Foreman was coming of a loss against Morrison 15 months prior, so Moorer would've got no credit at all.
I was praying for Holyfield to beat Tyson, for a reason. I knew that Moorer could beat Holy, and I was a big Moorer fan, but an even bigger George fan. George is living proof that the era of 70's fighters was the toughest of all. When Moorer fought Holyfield, I was praying for an upset that happened, and finally, the Moorer-Foreman fight. Foreman was wayy behind going into the championship rounds, but the jab was landing, 1-2's landed and the second sequence was the equivalent of Moorer running into a telephone pole.
LOL>...Yeah, no doubt! I still can't believe Moorer got knocked out by Foreman. Moorer had the fight in the bag, and then Boom!
It was a shocking upset and great win for Foreman.....I watched it live! But looking back on it now, I think it was a total travesty that Foreman was given that shot against Moorer, especially considering that there were so many other guys available who were at least active and not so old.
If Michael would have beaten George (like he had been doing perfectly for 11 rounds) the likelyhood at the time was that Mike would have faced the very interested Herbie Hide in a unification fight as Hide was the newly crowned and very vocal WBO Champion... Also interested but looking in a different direction was Oliver McCall who as WBC Champion was trying to get a look in at the winner of the match, But with Tyson comeing out of Jail very soon Oliver was supposed to hold on to the championship (For Don KIng) so they could set up the McCall v Tyson fight later on to get Mike regaining the title.. Oliver defended once against Larry Holmes , but the idea took a turn when he was releived by Bruno in England which made for a Tyson v Bruno return match an absolute must at MGM the following year.. The fight at the time though that was being hyped if i remember correctly was Herbie Hide against Moorer possibly in Las Vegas or AC... That was the so called plan... The IBF soft touch for Michael was a mandatory against its #1 challenger Axel Shultz... So Hide and Shultz were the probable pick..
In truth, Moorer was doing better vs Foreman than Holyfield was until the final round. If Moorer had won, I reckon his credit would be a bit less than Holyfield's win over Foreman. Why? Foreman was 0-2 in title shots before the Moorer fight, losing to Holyfield and Morrison. Had Foreman lost again, I feel the credit would have been less.
i watching the HBO legendary nights programme the other day and Moorer sounded still very bitter, especially when George claims to have planned the whole thing.
hide - moorer was the fight that would of been made...maybe even a comebacking morrison. anyways 3 chinny guys (this is not a bad thing form an entertainment point of view) with very very good power. we prolly would of seen some crazy score cards to of followed.
Not surprised, that fight overshadowed the whole of Moorer's career and it was one in which he was having arguably the best all-round performance of his career. Then he hangs around a bit too long and boom. I didn't know that Herbie was in the picture. I know that Moorer was unenthusiastic about fighting Lewis after he beat Holyfield, unless Lewis was willing to give network options to sweeten the pot. Don King did definitely want to keep McCall on top of that WBC belt though, to the point where he refused a Lewis rematch even though Oliver wanted it himself, and while the Bruno loss could've been a problem Don had already covered all the bases and buddied up to Bruno. Most likely, Moorer would've actually had a pretty quiet '95 with a routine mandatory defence and a nice soft voluntary, keeping his powder dry for what was already looking like a stacked '96.
Moorer probably would have defended successfully against Schulz, before being decapitated by Tyson who may unify all 3 belts in beating Bruno aswell as being Linear. Holyfield would be seen as all the greater when he beat Tyson as Bruno and Moorer would make him more of a legit champ. Then Holyfield beats a Moorer who had only lost to Tyson BEcause Moorer would have the win over an even greater Holyfield and only lost by KO to a near prime Great in Tyson and Holy he would be ranked higher and be seen as say a Norton/Schmelling/Patterson of his time
