3 voluntaries... Yes, this is getting beyond ridiculous.

They should but I doubt they will...

I never understand the criticism of a champion for being active.

A mandatory has to be made once per year. Is it your position that a fighter should not be allowed to defend his title more than once or twice in that span regardless of if the mandatory is due?

And in this case, should he not be allowed to fight because the mandatory contender sends word to the sanctioning body that he needs more time and cannot be ready to fight by the time the mandatory is due (in this case, mid-January)? So the challenger should be allowed to hold things up because he's not ready?

Hypothetically, if Povetkin and Wilder reach an agreement to fight, say, April 30, and Povetkin gets cut or breaks his hand in training and is out for a few more months, should Wilder not be able to fight another voluntary defense?

Povetkin has only been the mandatory since May. You act like he's been waiting for years. In fact, less than one year.

If Povetkin pushes the fight back to late SUMMER, which is what his promoter said they were looking at today ...

I actually think Povetkin is in danger of losing his mandatory status. Povetkin is on the clock.

Wilder is an active, defending WBC champion. Wilder wants to defend the title. The WBC wants big sanctioning fees.

But if Povetkin's team wants the fight pushed back to late summer (August) ... and Wilder wants to defend the WBC belt before then (and pay the WBC its sanctioning fees) ... they aren't dumping Wilder.

They may tell Povetkin to sh*t or get off the pot. (The WBC isn't making anything off him while he's biding his time.)

According to Povetkin's team, he's already in training. So, there's none of this "Povetkin didn't have a full camp" nonsense.

Wilder wants to fight in April (12 weeks from now).

Wilder is the champion. April fits into the WBC's deadline. (Povetkin's been a mandatory since last May.)

So, it's up to Povetkin's team.

But he already passed on the January fight this year. If he passes on an April fight, and he wants to delay it to LATE SUMMER SOMETIME ... Wilder shouldn't have to wait around for him. The division is just getting HOT.

These older fighters wanting everyone to wait eight months between bouts are going to get left in the dust.

I get the feeling Povetkin's team thought Wilder/Haymon was going to dump the WBC belt by now.

I don't know if they've ever had any intention of fighting Wilder.

Then let me make it clear for you.....

He won the belt 17 Jan 2015..........it is 19 Jan 2016 today

He hasn't made a mandatory defense of his title, not in 2015, and not within 365 days of winning the belt.

HE SHOULD BE STRIPPED PER WBC RULES

It can't be any easier to understand. Fighting 3 no-hopers doesn't excuse you from meeting obligations.

There was no mandatory when he won the title.

Povetkin became the mandatory in May 2015.

Wilder offered Povetkin the fight in January (last weekend) ... which would've been inside the year date from when he won the title. But Povetkin's team turned it down.

Wilder wants to fight in April (a month before the May deadline). Povetkin's team wants the fight BY LATE SUMMER (and April or May isn't LATE SUMMER).

Wilder is meeting all the WBC guidelines with regard to dates. But the WBC mandatory is the one holding things up.

Povetkin declined the fight in January. And, according to his promoter, he isn't looking at April, either.

If the WBC mandatory doesn't want the fight ... the WBC can always name a new mandatory.

When Povetkin became mandatory is irrelevant, the rules state a mandatory defense each year.

I agree, if Povetkin wasn't available then the WBC should have enforced the next rated contender as mandatory and forced Wilder to fight him.

4 consecutive voluntary defenses against bums

And there's no sign that he'll ever step up or be stripped

    Povetkin agreed to step aside.
But otherwise you would be correct.

Fury didn't get any time to choose to defend his IBF belt even though he beat a long time champ and everyone knew there was a rematch clause. Fair?
