So in this day and age after a loss you are shot and supposed to retire?

    Agreed.

It is the fighters that we don't see that are in the most danger. Never mind the Evander Holyfield's of this world, but the journeymen who make the sport go around.

    Welcome to the internet age.

Anything that happens spurs an onslaught of overreaction. It isn't just boxing. Look at Britney. She is freakin' selling out across the world again.

Certainly there is some truth here but nothing hasn't already been pointed out. As with most things accomplishments are exaggerated and downplayed.. defeats are no exception either.

To put in perspective your examples above it has to be pointed out that fighters depending on their career and skillset are going to have a different level of expectation.

Hatton is a prime example here because when most people wrote him off what they were remarking on was his position as competing at an elite level. Hatton had always been an overachiever and his performances both before and after Kostya are strong indicaters for that. Once he got to the PBF fight it was about him disproving this theory and showing his infact an elite level fighter and Kostya was not an aberation. His resounding defeat spelled the end of that and showed that he can be competitive but his prospects in most people's mind of being an elite fighter are unfounded based on his skillset. In other words, his career may continue but he's reached the end of his upward climb.. he's accomplished all he is able to accomplish. It may not be fair but the assessment based on his career and what people had seen of him at this point was I believe fair.

I disagree that the pervailing opinion after the Mosley vs Cotto fight was that Mosley was shot. It was in fact a very close battle that Mosley came out of as strong as he came into. If anything it proved that he was still able to compete at this level.

Again I disagree on the notion that Margo was percieved as shot after Mosley. I think more than anything people were fed up with what was reveiled about his 'Plaster of Paris' and in most people's minds what it really proved was that perhaps he wasn't the monster everyone was making him out to be. Just a gutty, tough fighter that again overachieved based on skillset he brought to the table.

The nature of Cotto's loss to Margo was both shocking and concerning to most who saw the fight. There was justifiable concern that perhaps he wouldn't be the same fighter anymore. I'd say the general concensus after the fight was he should rest and then it a wait and see based on his performances there after.

Preach on!! People are so damned worried about that "0" on a record it stops big fights from happening.

Very rare now a days to hear Mike Buffer say: "Somebody's "0" has got to go!".

I don't know if I can say Hatton was looking like a shadow of himself in his last fight. He was very much the old Hatton we knew: Come-forward, push the action kinda guy. Only, he got tagged by a faster, stronger and better fighter.

It depends on the fighter who lost. For example oscar delahoya after taking a beating from pacquiao. He needs to retire cuz he is really old and pretty much has nothing left.

Cotto-Pavlik-Hatton etc shouldn't have to retire cuz they are still young and can still come back after a devastating defeat. Pavlik and cotto already bounce back after their last loss. I think hatton can bounce back too but he needs to stay away from fighting the elite. :good

Depends on how you lose, where you are in your career, who beat you, etc. Different for every fighter.

so when exactly did his chin crack?

Lennox Lewis' chin got 'cracked' twice just like Hatton, didn't stop him from getting better same with wlad klit.

    I concur.

If everyone needed to retire after getting ko'ed then there wouldn't be too many fighters around to fight.

That's what I believe are in the back of peoples' minds...
