In the UK? It was a big fight here and you saw the Wembley turn out. Joshua has a nice character so he will probably continue to get the support. Not sure how he will do in the American market though. We tend to show more support for countrymans in sport here than in America, probably cos Americans sinneverything so they're spoilt. Also PPV is £15 here so far cheaper. Hatton drew more than that vs floyd.
and it was a great fight aswell, its only going to pump up his next numbers when he likely faces and ends fury WAR AJ
Of course, he will not be in as big fights as the Wlad Klitschko one for most years in the rest of career. Once we get past fights against Tyson Fury (Late 2018 if ever), Joseph Parker (could be ASAP), Deonkey Wilder (never happens) and David Haye (early 2018) who else is there to face in a mega PPV fight? I am sure names will come along in the next 3-4 years as major contenders. So he only has mega PPV opposition for 2-3 fights max.
Numbers for the hatton fight are not official, that's where I'm actually getting the 1.15M. The fight could have done 1.5M buys, I don't know, all I know is that it smashed the record (Hatton's record) That's why I put the + in there.
Joshua is becoming such a star where no matter who he fights, he will smash records, because people pay to watch him, easy win or challenge. A bit like tyson, people would keep paying money to watch 1 round KOs
Obviously he is PPV from now on- no matter who he fights. I was referring to whether they would be mega PPV by his standards or just moderate PPV (in terms of income)
Yeah, why not? The heavyweight champ is usually the face of boxing except for in the eighties when Holmes was ducking everybody and it was Leonard. Then in the 2000s when everyone at heavyweight was ducking each other and the champ was fighting over in Germany it was Mayweather and Pacquiao. The rest of the time, it's been the heavyweight champ. Pretty sure that Marciano overshadowed Robinson in their era. In the 90s Oscar was big but still not as big as Tyson and Holyfield. He might have been bigger than Lewis in the early 2000s though. So that's only like three times when the face of boxing wasn't the heavyweight champ. AJ is a young dominant proven champion, and he'll remain the face of boxing until he goes to jail for **** or gets caught for cocaine and DUIs.
Wasnt just the numbers it was who came over from the states to watch this fight, when you get people like Arnie and other actors and musicians jumping on a plane in America, jumping the pond and sitting ringside in London UK for a fight against a Ukranian and a Brit you know you this is big. Ofcourse if Spence beats Brook then he may be seen of the face of Boxing too.
These numbers show the US networks need to rethink their PPV price point. Surely a greater number of buys at a lower price gives a better platform to charge advertisers and sponsors more, with more eye balls on the promotion?
America is all about the dollar. Theyll push the price as high as possible if they know the average sucker will still buy.
He's half way there to being the face of boxing. He already is in the UK and probably Europe, he just needs to break the US market. He has the media friendly image, the exciting style, the physical presence you'd expect from a heavyweight champion of the world so it's a good chance he can break the US market. But it comes down to his opposition in the US. He started off well by fighting some US fighters in Martin, Breazeale and Molina so he is at least already known by the hardcore US fans but it will come down to whether Wilder is willing to face him. A unification fight against an American title holder will be the platform he needs to break the US. But then he'll need other US heavies to face to keep growing his brand.
Dude, how did you misread this so bad? This means that fights in the UK are going to be PPV from now on and the UK ppv price is going up. Stuff was free in the UK for so long because you never had anybody good. Now, you got some stars and they want to get paid. All the **** that happened in the American markets are going to happen in Britain now. You're going to have promoters battles, guys ducking each other, rival tv channels not working together, and all that comes with it. You might even lose boxing on regular tv. Prices don't ever go down. They give you the first taste for free then when they see that you're hooked they come for your balls.
I think they will continue to get away with high PPV prices in the USA as the population is 5x larger than the UK, but they could make more. Typical USA PPVs are $60 (correct me if I'm wrong), while Joshua-Klitschko was £20 (=$25.8). Assuming J-K did 1.5m buys, then a USA PPV needs to do 645,000 buys to make the same gross amount of money which most don't. Saying all that, I find PPV a bit of a joke and would never buy one! But in the UK, it's not much different from football now. If all you want is the football, then you have to spend almost £50 a month for Sky Sports. If you watch one game a week then that's over £10 a game, AND that's not even all the games because BT sport have a bunch of them, AND there's 3 months in the summer when they aren't playing.
