why did you avoid everyone roy? benn, mclellan, eubank, prime calzaghe, collins, michalkewski etc etc why did you wait till calzaghe was 36 and lost the use of his hands to enter the ring with him,and then walk out with your face hanging off after being carried for 6 rounds by a fighter who was always your superior? why are we meant to believe that sparring with john ruiz for 12 rounds elevates you to a demi-god status and is supposed to be (in sporting terms) the greatest thing since sliced bread,i can name a dozen middleweights/lightheavies etc who would have done the same thing to old johnny b goode? why was it that when you finally steped up to the plate you got starched by that rocky actor and old man johnson, say what you want about calzaghe the guy would have never rolled over to those two? so many questions....and it all started so promising roy i.e toney
McClellan - the Benn fight was, in G-Man's opinion, the one that was going to get him the Jones fight. Benn - I believe he could have made this one happen, the big stumbling block seemed to be King's demands. Jones didn't want to be optioned to Don King. Can you blame him? Eubank and DM he should have matched, I think. Waste of talent in many respects, I agree. He's in my top 30 all time pound for pound based upon his incredible talent, but imagine him with the attitude of a Mickey Walker or a Harry Greb? And we'd know for sure about that chin too.
I see Roy's career very similar to Floyd...I think he can beat anyone from 160-175 (as I now think Floyd can beat anyone from 135-147) during his generation, but thinking it and actually winning the fights are different things!!! This thread has a lot of hate behind it that I don't agree with...but the truth is Roy could have been top 10 of all time easy had his resume been a bit better and included the likes of the names you listed above plus perhaps Nunn and certainly a prime Hopkins. I don't always blame Roy for these fights not coming off, but whatever the reason...it's detrimental to his standing now.
Benn and Mcclellan were the two who were the closest to beat jones. But Benn would have been knocked out. Mc Clellan had a real chance though. Don't know why he didn't fight them all. That's sad, he would have been considered probably the number 2 pound for pound after Robinson.
benn - Roy Jones KO 5 mclellan - Roy Jones TKO 10 eubank - Roy Jones KO 8 ,prime calzaghe - Roy Jones UD Calzaghe knocked down twice ,collins - Roy Jones KO 2 ,michalkewski - Roy Jones KO 12 If these are the best guys who can come up with who Roy "ducked" it proves what a great career he had. None of them were fit to carry his duffle bag.
6 fighters are named above. Name 6 wins on jones' resume that are on a par with these guys. Hell, name 3.
Hopkins Toney Tarver Woods Ruiz Harding Hopkins and Toney victories alone were/are miles ahead of anyone on that list.
Hopkins fairly green my ass. Both Roy Jones and Hopkins had about the same number of fights and Hopkins would go on to KO 9 of his next 11 opponents. How are Tarver, or Woods any lesser fighters then Collins or Michelkewlski? They certainly accomplished more and fought better OP. And a middleweight beating a heavyweight for the first time in 100 years. Forgettaboutit. Your OP is a joke. Jones would have ran through every name on that list.
YOUR RIGHT AT LEAST WOODS PUT UP A FIGHT AGAINST JOHNSON.. AND TARVER DID STAR IN A STALLONE MOVIE,DARIUSZ HAD TO MAKE DO WITH A MARKY MARK VIDEO! YOUR RIGHT THOUGH MY OPINION IS A JOKE,IM NO MATCH FOR SOMEONE WHO COMPARES WOODS TO MICHALKEWSKI
Of the guys he missed out on, I think the easiest fight would be Benn and the toughest would be Eubank.
