Which means he's technically a "past ATG!" Now that the smoke cleared, and it's all set and done, how do you guys rate Floyd Money Mayweather within the pantheon of boxing?
I'm sure others will prove a more insightful view but l'd say he's defensively he's in the top 10 of all time at 130 he's in the top 3 and p4p ranking top 15-25 with me personally having him closer to the front of that range.
I wouldn't have him in the top 25, but "ATG p4p ratings" are a bit of a nightmare really. At 130 he might be #2 behind Chavez, but that's only including the fighters who explicitly fought in the 130 division in the modern era (since the 60s or 70s), rather than large feathers and small lightweights in that range from further back in time (eg. Saddler etc.).
I'm not too far off from that. Mayweather was a great, great fighter. Incredible career of fighting the best, and going undefeated. Perhaps the best defensive fighter of all time.
I believe I can think of 30 fighters more accomplished, but not 40. In very rough order: Robinson Ali Louis Pep Benny Leonard Greb Langford Tunney Armstrong Gans Saddler Duran SRL Charles Canzoneri Moore Johnson Walcott Lewis Whitaker Jones Jr. Monzon Napoles Hagler Hearns Walker Frazier Holyfield Griffith Hopkins Foreman There's 31 already. And I missed some ATG old fighters too if you want to take a few newer names off. But I'd find it hard to nitpick that list too much. The list might actually reach 40. Tiger Flowers, possibly JCC, Jofre, etc.
Hes still out training for something and when the new venue opens in lv who do you think is going tp headline?? When i was a kid we had an old five and dime store in town and every year the owner would have a big sale announcing his retirement and the inevitable store closing. People would flock in and spend their $$$ and he would go on with business as usual until the following yr and his next retirement sale. Thats Mayweather. Hes been teasing fake retirements and comebacks for years in order to generate false demand and the suckers fall for it every time.
Regardless, my main point was to ask classic posters to asses his career in the context of other ATGs.
I'm not a huge Floyd fan but anyone who isn't crazy nostalgic about past fighters or a hater realizes that he's at the very least top 20. More like top 10. I would put him some where around 5-8 personally
It doesnt take nostalgia to see that he always had every advantage in his favor and still cherry picked. It doesnt take a hater to see there have been well over 20 men in boxing who accomplished more with less against stiffer competition.
