What did the forumites make of his showing at the weekend? I found it a bit ''meh'' myself, he's clearly not going to attempt to make any refinements so it was same old same old for the most part. Relying on workrate, using his own size advantages against himself, telegraphing his punches with his feints, etc. He was a lot sharper and didn't force his work quite as much as he did versus Lara, but that may be due to the fact that A) Ishida's not as good as Lara and B) Ishida's not a southpaw. Anyhow, what did you make of him? Added to that; is he as past it as was feared or is Lara just the type of fighter that he would have always struggled to beat? Will he figure amongst the best at 154(assuming he'll stay there) and who should/could he fight next? Alvarez, Dzinziruk, Molina-Kirkland winner, K9, Trout, Martirosyan, Angulo, Delvin Rodriguez, Cintron II, Spinks?
Wasn't massively inpressed although my version wasn't great quality. Seemed like Ishida hurt him a couple of times which isn't good for someone that hits as hard as Ishida. The video posted in the general of his post fight interview was slightly worrying imo. Sounds like his speech has gone a little bit
hes one of them fighters as soon as they get physically hurt in a fight they seem to never be the same like Jeff Lacey after Calzaghe Jermaine Taylor after Pavlik although i am suprised its happened to williams as he wasnt a bully like fighter relying on a big dig.
He should have beaten Lara IMO. He was just too damn stupid. Molina had shown that Lara struggled under pressure, and that if you didn't give him the time and space to counter, that he could be dealt with fairly easily. Williams was just too stupid to use his advantages in his favour - the story of his career. If Williams had been sharper and not telegraphed every single move he made (which allowed Lara to counter him), then he would have just swarmed Lara and outworked him. Williams was at his best against Winky Wright, who wasn't exactly in his prime, but still a fairly crafty guy. Williams was sharp and didn't give Winky the time and space, above all though, he was confident. The Lara fight was the sheepish-est I've ever seen Paul Williams. I think getting spaaaarked out by Sergio messed with his head, he looked scared to throw punches against Lara, and as a result when he did throw they were normally weak, telegraphed shots. The man is lacking confidence above all else IMO. Looked better against Ishida, because Ishida is crap. Williams was faster, sharper, threw more shots and really, he had nothing to be scared of (Kirkland's chin is just THAT bad). I think he'll gain confidence, and depending on who he fights next, he might look better IMO. He'd beat K9, Martirosyan, Spinks, Andrade, Angulo and Cintron IMO. I reckon Molina could beat him and Kirkland might just spark him out.
I used to be a big fan of Paul Williams. He beat Margarito before Tony became the man, which is pretty ****ing commendable.
The performance ................. annoyingly predictable , but effective , he had enough to get the job done on Ishida , lets say that much Ranking him is difficuilt , it wasnt long ago he was considered p4p top 5 , now most wouldnt rank him top 5 @154 :deal Look , he is what he is , he's rangey , athletic , very very fit and strong , very game , by and large he's fairly exciting and ultimatley he's not a bad watch , i like Williams , i think he has the tools to grab a couple more title's @54 If team Williams want to do right by the sport of boxing they should rematch Lara , but that aint gonna happen , if not , then get him a world title and go from there , he's very capable of being relevant in the division
He'd drub Kirkland! He wouldn't gas like Angulo and Kirkland is an accumulative hitter so cant see him starching Williams.
He seems more fragile than Angulo I reckon, Lara had him hurt and it seemed as though Ishida stiffened his legs a little bit. Kirkland hits much harder than those mopes. I actually think Williams has as much of a chance of knocking Kirkland out than Kirkland does knocking Williams out, though Paul would have to do it early. And Kirklands a Southpaw I'd pick Paul if it came down to it, but like I said Kirkland stopping Williams isn't out of the question IMO.
Admittedly he's **** against southpaws...MM91 didn't see that bit mate. I think for the amount he ships P-Dub is incredibly resilient.
that was back when it was billed as 'the most feared man in boxing' vs the 'the most feared specimen in boxing' and a bloody good fight. personally i think margo might of started to 'wrap' his hands after this point due to the early ko's he got.
He's still the same fighter he was five years ago, flaws and all. He's a bit more prone to getting hurt is all.
