im not even a canelo fan i can just never tell what ggg wants...does he want to unify? does he want big money fights? looks like he might be shooting down a chance to do both in one night
Kirk, this fight is not ideal, but this mess is the WBCs not Canelo's. We, including you, were anticipating a Cotto-Canelo showdown for a long time. Cotto ducked Canelo in the first attempt and I believe that is when he decided to go after Martinez at a catchweight. Cotto came in to the Martinez fight from 154 with a 1-2 record.. Pretty pathetic for him to get a shot at the lineal title at MW in his first fight there when his Jr. MW record was extremely weak. That is when evrything got even more screwy. Now we have an unproven Jr. MW in Cotto fighting the MW champion at a catchweight. Stupid ABC organizations. To everyones surprise Cotto wins and in his next fights defends is WBC title at a catchweight yet again. Finally the much anticipated Cotto-Canelo fight is agreed, at a catchweight, AGAIN, and Canelo beats him. The WBC MW title is a complete joke. So why are people so ****ed at Canelo? He did not create this mess. Canelo has been fighting top level opposition consistently, Cotto was just another scalp that WE ALL wanted to watch who happened to be a MW titlist and Canelo went after him, clearly not for the title as the fight was in very high demand, Belt or no Belt... The reason I give Canelo a pass is because he has proven to not duck anyone, so himnot gunning for GGG right away is okay because if any fighter right now deserves the benefit of the doubt, its Canelo. If anyone is to blame its the WBC for being so shady and not enforcing their rules, and Cotto for his starting the catchweights at MW. The way I'll look at this fight its just a soft touch after fighting Mayweather, Lara, Trout, Angulo, Kirkland, and Cotto.
if cotto had fought ggg at 160 and ggg destroyed him like were all sure he would....these guys would be screaming about how great ggg and how he destroyed the hall of fame bound cotto...lol...thats the sad part here....you could take that to the bank too
Not speaking you... I am talking actual Canelo fans. I just don't understand this weird allegiance to fighters where they refuse to condemn them. Its like once they start cheerleading for a fighter, their 'guy' can do no wrong. Where are all the fans of boxing and not boxers?
:good As big a fan of GGG as I am, and as much as I'd like to see GGG KO Khan, I would consider him fighting Khan a clear duck and a cherry pick of the highest order, if GGG had chosen Wade instead of him being his mandatory I'd have been annoyed by that and criticize him as well.
The worse is we have many posters whose hate for some fighters is bigger than their love for the sport. There are people out there defending this nonsense because of their hatred towards Golovkin.
I can put the title mess aside.... because it is indeed a mess. Take the titles out of it, and this is still a ridiculous fight. A middleweight (say what you want, but Canelo has not fought at 154 for almost 3 years now) is fighting a welterweight, who has never competed above 147, and whose last serious serious opponent was four years ago, at 140lbs, and one in which he got KO'd in, and has been on the 'comeback trail' ever since. Its simply an indefensible move by Canelo. imo. Its a money grab, nothing more. It is what it is, and I'm going to dump on him, and his fans that defend it, for it. That being said, that doesn't erase the credit I give him for fighting Trout and Lara. (I don't put much stock into his Angulo or Kirkland fights), and likewise, they don't make him immune to criticism. Should he go on to fight Golovkin later this year, as I actually think he might do (hes always met his most worthy challengers, a credit to Canelo) this fight will be lost in the shadow of that event, no doubt.... until then, I will call it like I see it, which is this was a pretty ridiculous money grab in a sham of a fight. I understand these type of fights are part of the sport.... that doesn't mean I'm not going to call them on it. Just sucks that boxing is comprised of a fan base that cares more about individual fighters than the actual sport.... people that become attached and emotionally invested in fighters to the point where they try to rationalize and cut slack when their fighters do things that should be criticized.
It's the same guys that were ****ting on Canelo before he even became a MW that are doing all the *****ing(also the new GGG groupies). Nothing to see here.
Remove the titles like you saidand you have one fighter moving up 8 lbs to fight another fighter. If people are concerned about fight night weight, Khan has weighed in at 162 while Canelo is weighing in between 170-173. Again, that's only 8-11 pounds difference... I can show you countless examples of fighters outweighing their opponents by 10-15 pounds.. even nearly 20 like Cotto has before. If people think things are not fair for GGG, I say, welcome to this terrible sport we love. How many fighters get undeserved title shots? Including Cotto vs Martinez... Its the way it is. At least we have a fighter who fights anyone like Canelo as the Face of boxing.
honestly I kinda like this fight and I think canelo gonna lose to a welter for the second time :rofl but it is disrespectful for boxing...title defenses even optional have to be against a top 10-15 opponent
Yeah, I like this fight too. I think that Khan has a great shot at beating Canelo, as long as he don't get foolish in the exchanges. I read where Khan was studying the Mayweather fight but I hope that he looks at the Lara fight also because that is the real blueprint for him. With Khan being a right hander and possessing the speed he has, I think that he will be able to punish Canelo a lot more than Lara did. I'm looking for a Khan win.
The only thing I am outraged at is it's PPV. Because there is no way in hell I am going to pay for a fight that I know won't go more than 4 rounds.
a solid and well put together argument, except for the bold part. you canelo die hards need to quit using that argument, it weakens your case.
