I am now sparring against guys who are in the military and basically do nothing but work out and train. I can still fight on equal level with them but after almost every training I go home with a headache and a sore jaw with nothing but experience in return. These guys also outweigh me quite a bit so even without bad intent they still hit me hard.

I know getting hurt is part of boxing but I still have to graduate from college and find a job and that will be a lot harder if I have a messed up face and possible brain damage and that really isnt so unlikely at the current rate I'm sparing. Thinking of just training with the casuals and combining it with weight lifting to stay in shape

Why will it be harder if you have a "messed up face". I think you might be in the wrong sport if your worried about getting brain damage just from sparring...... IF your serious about boxing then you need to rethink your mindset. If your not serious about boxing then theres your answer. go back to the casuals and do weights to keep in shape.

I am serious about boxing but I'm also from the Netherlands. Boxing is pretty much dead here and there is nothing you can achieve here. The best guy here has a contract from a German based team and he only makes like 1300-1500 a month and that guy sacrificed everything for boxing

You could move latter in your life BUT by serious about boxing i don't mean for money. Imo money is not worth the pain and sacrifice. I meant if you have a passion for boxing and you want to box then you want to improve so you have to stick with the guys who are hurting you as long as your improving. If your half asked about boxing and are seriously worries about your health and education (believe it or not this DOES NOT make you a ***** or ***** or w.e) then train with the casuals. Think about what you want and the answer will come

Lemme show you how the fan percentage is distributed in Malta (where i live):

    95% football
    2% Basketball
    2% Atheltics
1% Other <---- Thats where Boxing goes in

Me and my team are slowly raising the bars for the Boxing community here and are increasing those percentages by alot.. a fighter in my team recently turned pro and gets MAX £1400 a month (if he fights twice a month) but then gets a shitload more from coaching .. Put grease on your face and body so the shots slip and won't leave such a harsh impact. Also fight smarter, if you are to their equal level but weigh less you should be outboxing them easily with speed and brains especially if you use lighter gloves .. Just use your mind and heart and you'll get better at it

so either ask them to scale it back or spar with other people who want to spar lightly. If you aren't training to fight amateur or pro or anything, then stay in shape with boxing and scratch that sparring itch when it arises.

dont spar with them. spar with equal weight opponents and use right equipment. if there is no equal weight, say them to put bigger gloves and impact will be lighter.

i have the same problem. sparring with 30kg heavier then me sometimes is really painful, and misty (after training :)) experience. he usually uses 20oz while i have my 12 oz gloves, but when cage of gym is locked he uses 10oz, that is really brutal, but i learned a lot from that guy. if you cant learn nothing from them and still getting hit, change partner.

You shouldn't be worried about brain damage when you're only sparring man. Remember that the purpose of sparring is to learn so you guys need to turn it down a bit and learn from each other.
On the other hand, if you belong to a gym infested with aspiring pros that are having daily old school gym wars... then yes you can get hurt. My point is that people who are noticeably bigger and better than you can do some serious damage...even while sparring...if those are your primary partners at your gym. Other than that isolated scenario ,however, you either need to get better, spar less or choose another sport.:bbb

Amateur boxing is safe, I had the same fear of brain damage, but I did more research and it seems that brain damage fears are unfounded.I think as long as one is conservative (no two sparring days back to back, if you see stars, stop, etc), almost anybody will turn out ok.
