So what round would Lennox Lewis lay out Liston?

It's either Liston knocing his ass out or Lewis outboxing him.

 

Why can't Liston box with Lennox? a 36 year old Ray Mercer outjabbed and nearly outboxed Lennox Lewis. I don't see why Liston can't do any better with his jab, skills, range, head movement.

 

I didn't hear about a third fight but in one of my earlier posts I said it toke balls for Patterson to face him. He may have had some fear in him but the man had courage overall to take on Liston.

 

This Lennox Lewis overrating is starting to get out of hand...

 

I think you have to understand Patterson to understand his wanting a third fight with Liston. Patterson was a guy who never felt he EVER boxed to his full potential. He always stated that he was at his absolute physical best against Johannson in the second fight and at that he was only about 80 or 90% of what he felt he was really capable of. Patterson was just a pure sportsman, a pure athlete who really wanted to challenge himself against the best not only to prove what he could accomplish to everyone else but also to test himself and prove his own worth to himself. Thats one of the reasons why he got rid of Cus D'Amato who was too over-protective due partly to his war against corruption in boxing (something that is never mentioned when people are bashing D'Amatos careful matchmaking of Floyd.It wasnt fear of Floyd getting beaten, it was fear of losing the title to the mobsters who were still running the sport). I absolutely believe he legitimately wanted a fight with Liston and there isnt anything to suggest it was a far fetched idea after the two had lost the title. Whether a promoter would have paid for it is another thing but both guys were in or near the top ten in the mid/late sixties and both guys had done various things in the ring to keep them relevent. I dont think anything in Floyds record, particularly after his split with D'Amato gives any indication that he ever feared anyone. The guy was fighting with best fighters in the world, many of whom were bigger and stronger than him, into his very last fight and still giving a good account of himself and more often than not taking the fight to those guys.

In 100 years Lewis will be bigger than Jesus, if he is over rated as much as the ancient fighters of today.

Over rated? By whom? Lewis faced the best of his time in a talented time of heavyweight boxing. He won all legacy fights over Holyfield, Tyson, and Klitschko. He faced a ton of punchers, pretty much ducked no man, and is one of two champions to beat every man he fought.

Liston vs. Lewis is a toss up. I like whomever does well early. Lewis could certainly test Liston intangibles, just like Liston's bomb could end it early.

 

Lewis has a great resume. He made Bowe duck him ( and beat him easy in the Olympic gold medal match ). Lewis easily beat Golota, Morrison, and Ruddock. He beat Mercer on one of his better nights.

Tyson and Holy were both washed up and Holy still deserved the second fight. Hell, even against an overweight Tyson who was a good decade past his best Lewis was scared shitless in the first round and afraid to take chances until Tyson was damn near dead. Even Steward was screaming at Lewis to do more. His win against Klitchko doesnt prove **** IMO because he was losing the fight, getting rocked, and then refused to give Klitchko a rematch. Scratch that, he ****ing retired.

As for Bowe ducking him thats all bull****, that has been so stretched out of preportion its ridiculous. Bowe refused to fight Lewis because he had already won the legitimate championship and to continue the unification tournament under the terms dictated would have meant he would have had to have signed over percentages to Lewis' promoters. Thats why he didnt fight Lewis. A year or two later when both had lost their championships and were contenders Lewis was doing a radio interview and Bowe called in to publicly challenge Lewis and Lewis refused. Of course this was at a time when he was cherry picking his competition. People also say Tyson ducked Lewis in the late 1990s but thats bull**** as well. Tyson refused to fight on HBO which at that time had Lewis under contract. Tyson's contract with Showtime was exclusive and gave no room for him to fight on other networks. Lewis' contract had a specific clause in it now called "The Tyson Clause" which allowed him a one off deal to face Tyson on a competing network if he chose. The fact of the matter was he chose not to. Instead he threatened to sue Tyson to give up his belt. Rather than be sidelined with a lengthy legal proceding Tyson paid Lewis step aside money so he could continue his career and the rest is history. How many champions have won a belt without ever fighting for it? Lewis did it twice.

You say that Lewis beat Mercer on one of his best nights. Horse****! Do you even watch boxing? Mercer was out of shape for that fight, fat, and had no stamina. He stated he maybe trained for two weeks for it and still got robbed of the decision. Yeah he should really be proud of that "victory" afterwards his face was swollen up like a balloon. What a joke. He beat Bowe easily in the olympics? Really? Have you seen that fight? Its one of the worst stoppages Ive ever seen, even in the amateurs which have some pretty bad stoppages. Lewis was well behind after the first and had been rocked on at least two occasions at least as bad as the punch that they stopped Bowe. Lewis snaps Bowes head back in the second round and the ref stops the fight. Thats it. Talk about Bogus. Hell make it three championships he was handed...

 

Mid rounds, 7 or 8 IMO. Liston was a pretty good boxer with good reach, similar dimensions to Rahman, I see him having some close rounds from the outside but Lewis would work him out and overpower him

 

Some of this sarky provactive thread starting **** while funny is getting out of hand. Getting a bit genral forum in here you know what i mean.

Anyway this been threatening to turn into a real discussion so can anyone shed more light on the bold bit above? Honestly not heard bout this before.

 

the 2 bits i bever heard before and want to see evidence or at least some testimony to:

1. To fight Lewis Bowe was signing over rights etc to Lewis's promoters making it more of a finacial duck and thus more understandable.

2. Bowe challnged Lewis on radio and was refused

Not saying necessarily these didn't happen but seen lots of Bowe Lewis talk here and not heard either of these 2 points before which is unsual. Maybe I am just oblivious?
