Beautiful punch. Great timing, accuracy and sufficient power. Looked like a normal counter left hook to me. What did Floyd mean with the 'Check Hook' thing ?

It's just a type of hook. He didn't do the full windup. It looked like he just used his arms in it. He also moved back and to the left, and this probably gave it the power that the usual rotation gives.

    LOL
'check left hook' is the most basic move, nothing special, this was one of the first things taught to me as an amateur... its basically a short left hook that acts as a defensive shot to measure out your opponents distance or to hit him with when hes in fighting thus the term 'CHECK' you check out where he is... cause on the inside you cant see SH1T

i thought a check hook is when you use an advancing opponent's aggressiveness against himself by phasing out and putting yourself in good position to throw the hook, then throw it? eh idk i asked my trainer about it today and thats what he told me :think

jones1, you are correct. You normally don't have the same effect on your opponent as Mayweather did. It will normally allow you to escape a certain position, or take another angle.

Yes -- its a counter left hook.
With your weight on your front foot, arms close to your body, you shift your weight and lean back as your opponent steps in.
This punch is intended to be short and involves a change of weight, pulling back to achieve maximum power.
The opponent rushing in often doesnt see this punch which maximizes its effectiveness.
Works well when countering a lazy right hand.
Mayweathers' check hook wasnt really that short, but it worked well because Hatton didnt see it.

No, you all are wrong. Yes the check hook occurred during a counter, but thats not what a "check hook" is.
A check hook is a basic move you normally learn in amateurs. It's a mix of a hook and an uppercut. It is thrown at a weird angle so it is not considered a uppercut. Your arm kinda looks like a check mark when you throw it, which is why it's called a check hook.
Mayweather threw the check hook as a counter. He hit him with it in both knockdowns.

    *EDIT*
Also forgot to mention. The punch is thrown as you steping back, this way you pull your opponent in and use his momentum against him. Which is why it was so effective against Hatton, because Hatton tends to lunge when he throws hooks. If you watch the fight again you will see it if you look closely. You have to be very fast in order to pull it off right.

floyds punch didn't look like a a mix between hook and uppercut, it looked like a basic left hook.

Tell that to Emanuel Stewart and Floyd. It takes a trained eye. Also the angle the camera shows it from might make it look like a regular hook.

i watched many replays, and watched the fight 4 or 5 times now, all it was, was a counter hook.

Again, all I gave was the definition of what a counter hook really is.

It was Emanuel Stewart and Mayweather that said it was a check hook that he thrown. And I'm very sure they know more about boxing than you do, so I'm guna go with what they said.
Also, it was a counter that he threw. But it was a check hook thrown as a counter. There are many different kinds of counters. Uppercut counters, cross counters, check hook counters, ect.

Not true. It's a legit punch you learn in the amateurs.
    Obviously you don't know much.
