So what would all of those old-school ATG's have said (or done)

    I was just thinking: what would all of those old-school greats that critics and old fight guys like Manny Steward and Larry Merchant hate to see Floyd Mayweather being compared with have said about last night's fight?

    Ofcourse there's no way to know this for sure but i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that i believe that guys like Harry Greb, Ray Robinson etc. would have scoffed at calling it unsportsmanlike to hit a guy who's just standing there with his hands down after that same guy just slammed his forehead into your face.

    Joe Louis was very sportsman like and even didn't take advantage of a situation where Billy Conn slipped (or so I've heard, I can't recall seeing this moment).

    But yeah, many great fighters, or not-so-great, have used dirty or unsportsman like tactics.

    Depends on the fighter. Plenty of them would have thought it was legit.

    So i guess the point is, isn't it wrong to say that last night's actions detract from Floyd's greatness when he is not even in the same stratosphere as Greb, Dempsey or Lamotta when it comes to being a mean dirty SOB?

    We know Tyson would've approved, he bit a man's ear off after getting head butted. Most fighters would have little to no problem with it.

    Liston would have knocked Ortiz out. I know that for a fact. And so would a lot of other great fighters. Ortiz was being naive, plain and simple.

    After a blatant headbutt, I think any fighter would look to retaliate. I know I would.

    Good point. Greb for damn sure wouldn't have let that **** abide.

    I can't think of ANY great fighter that wouldn't give it right back as good as he got. Saddler vs. Pep may as well have been a judo throw match lmao.

    Pacquiao and Toney are rather clean in the ring. They've committed fouls themselves, damn near any fighter does at some point, but they're pretty clean when their opponents are being very dirty to them.

    Ernest Mateen was pretty ridiculous in his fouling against Toney, and Toney just kept fighting his fight without retaliating. Same with Pacquiao against Agapito Sanchez and Nedal Hussein.
