After last night's heroic performance, where does this leave Erik Morales in terms of his next step?

With the affirmation from Maidana that he would rematch him even tomorrow, does this sound like a fight that could repeat itself into another FOTY candidate?

Maidana is more than likely to move onto bigger prospects, such as potential bouts with former 140lb champion Devon Alexander, Lucas Matthysse, an IBF title showdown with Zab Judah possibly? Or an even more stretched idea that Khan will accept a rematch later on in 2011 after any of the above listed potential matchups.

Morales on the other hand, on the forums some people are calling for Juan Manuel Marquez to fight Morales next, but un-doubtedly this matchup would have to take place at 140lbs, as at his advanced physical state, I think Morales would struggle greatly at Lightweight. That said despite people's disputes of Marquez's effectiveness above 135lbs, I feel at this stage he is too sharp and accurate for Morales at 140lbs, but as was proven last night, Erik refuses to take the odds stacked against him, and therefore can never be counted out as a legitimate threat throughout the fight.

As for last nights fight, I had it scored 114 - 114 as a draw.
I can see others giving it slightly in edge to Maidana, particularly the 3rd round could have gone either way, as was the story through rounds 5 - 10.
Erik's slightly lower workrate, yet more precise shots won him some rounds, whereas Maidana's better workrate, coupled with the terribly swollen eye of Morales proved to be the more imposing figure last night.

To the future, lets hope Morales gets his 4th world title, as the race for the 4th world title for a mexican fighter is looking more realistic. I see Barrera having enough to beat Soto at 135lbs, and at 140lbs its just a question of who gains one of the aphabet titles in the division first between Marquez and Morales. Neither of them have a shot at winning the legitimate 140lb crown, as Khan and Bradley will no doubt face off in the summer for the undisputed title, and neither Marquez or Morales beats Khan or Bradley at this point in their careers.

Lets hope its WAR MORALES!! :D

I think a re-match then a fight with JMM would be ideal from Eriks point of view. Maidana can forget about a Khan re-match and I think now there will be more fan interest in seeing him fight Morales again than a fight with Alexander or Matthyse.

Morales needs to retire before he get's seriously hurt. He done more than enough. Go away and keep your senses sir.

If you really were or are a fan of morales you should let him go in peace, and not fight pointless wars that will blur his legacy to the casual fans.

Yeah, Morales is a superb fighter but please do not enter the ring again.....I hate nothing more than seeing older boxers get hit like that and do life long damage....PLEASE STOP

It's going to be hard to simply just retire after feeling you were robbed of a win or even a draw in your final fight.

Morales' performance is all the more amazing when you consider he essentially fought with one eye the whole fight. That said, yes he needs to retire. Although Maidana is hard puncher, the worst thing Erik could do would be get into the ring with a speedy youngster... it's well known that speed kills, especially when it comes to veteran fighters.

morales-jmm should really happen now... unless jmm again prices himself out a 3rd time from a morales fight.

cant say im to fussed atm, if he gets dominated next time out its time to hang em up.

maidana hopefully will learn from this fight and up his game, he is an exciting fighter but very rough around the edges

Morales should retire for me. Even though he lost he came out of it with huge respect and proving that class is permanent. Maidana should fight Alexander next.

Good post I like the way you think. I think Maidana because of his style it is one usually dont stay around for too long at the top. Maidana did not look at his best IMO in respect to the great Morales, but Morales was basically fighting with one eye, still a shot fighter, and used his experience to humble the powerpunching Maidana so there should be no excuses. If a rematch happens, that's great, if not, I won't complain either. I don't like Erik's chances vs the rest of the 140lb elite I think a fight with JMM would be great to close the show. I don't give him much of a chance vs JMM, but if it's at 140lb Erik should be more comfortable not having to drain himself to do 135. Morales has nothing to prove, but after this very spirited performance by him and almost causing an upset it makes his potential fight with JMM more interesting. Fans more than anything will watch that fight for nostalgic purposes and won't see Morales as a real threat to JMM, but when Morales tries to show glimpses of his former self and trying to defy the odds when he has nothing left to prove it gives fans tremendous pride to be boxing fans. More than anything I really hope for a fight with JMM and if possible a 4th with MAB as they seem somewhat evenly matched for another great scrap. Maybe there won't be as much animosity, but they have a history and one of boxing's greatest rivalries.
