Don't have to name someone for all 17 divisions , great if you can though . If you are split between more than one fighter for a division then let express that aswell .

I could do a top ten for each of the 'classic' divisions , not for all of the newer ones though.

My method for rankings is to split the elite (the very best) of a division from the great and then rank them in conjunction with that . I try to take everything into considerstion - achievement at the weight, talent etc.

Here are my number 1s for each division -

    HW - Joe Louis
    CW - Holyfield
    LHW - Ezzard Charles
    SMW - Calzage
    MW - Robinson (maybe Hagler)
    LMW - Hearns
    WW - Robinson
    LWW - Pryor
    LW - Duran
    SFW - Mayweather
FW - Sanchez (gna cause loadsa arguments!)
    SBW - Gomez
    BW - Zarate
    SFLW -Galaxy
    FLW - Wilde
    LFLW - Michael Carbajal
    SW - Lopez

So , lets see what you guys think .

P.S. - Sorry if this has been done a milion times

The guys I consider the elite of each of the 'classic divisions are:

Heavyweight - 1. Joe Louis , 2. Muhammad Ali , 3. Jack Johnson , 4. Rocky Marciano , 5. Mike Tyson , 6. Lennox Lewis 7. Larry Homes 8. Jack Dempsey (after the first 2 this list is so tight that they could be shuffled around in any order , but I will stick by the order I have picked)

    Light-heavyweight - 1. Ezzard Charles , 2. Gene Tunney , 3. Michael Spinks , 4. Archie Moore , 5. Bob Foster , 6. Tommy Loughran

Middleweight - 1. Harry Greb , 2. Sugar Ray Robinson , 3. Marvin Hagler , 4. Carlos Monzon , 5. Bernard Hopkins , 6. Stanley Ketchel(this is my tightest list , the top 4 are not set in stone , I change my mind regularly , the same with 5 and 6)

    Welterweight - 1. Sugar Ray Robinson , 2. Henry Armstrong , 3. Sugar Ray Leonard , 4. Jose Napoles , 5. Felix Trinidad , 6. Kid Gavilan

    Lightweight - 1. Roberto Duran , 2. Benny Leonard , 3. Joe Gans , 4. Pernell Whitaker , 5. Csrlos Ortiz , 6. Ike Williams , 7. Shane Mosley

Featherweight - 1. Salvador Sanchez , 2. Willie Pep , 3.Sandy Saddler , 4. Eusebio Pedroza , 5. Peerless Jim Driscoll (said to be an uncrowned champion and won almost all of his newspaper decisions)

    Bantamweight - 1. Carlos Zarate , 2. Eder Jofre , 3. Manuel Ortiz , 4. Panama Al Brown , 5. Ruben Olivares

    Flyweight - 1. Jimmy Wilde , 2. , Miguel Canto , 3. Pascal Perez , 4. Benny Lynch

The method I use for my rankings is - for a fighter to be involved in them (or to be considered as one of the 'elite' of a particular division) they must have dominated/emerged as the best of their era . This method will have its criticisms , as it can be unfair because some fighters boxed in tougher eras than others (maybe Joe Frazier and Tommy Hearns would be number 1 if they fought in less tough ears) , but still I feel that them boxers who dominate their eras show that extra charectiristic to shine and rize above the rest.

There are exceptions here though , for example - I would say Willie Pep was number 1 of his era, yet Saddler did so well in that same time that he cant be excluded from this pack by my judgement , this is the case with Tommy Loughran also . In the case of Kid Gavilan and Archie Moore , they did not really dominate their eras (Ray Robinson and Ezzard Charles did) , but this is only because they fought at the same time as 2 of the best ever , they did though, go on to dominate the post-Robinson/Charles eras.

So, my entrants are picked largely on achievement , which i believe they should when doing rankings by weight class in history . Once I have sorted out who my entrants are , I then rank them taking into consideration skill, achievement, conquests, resumes, all-round talent, if they stil had good wins past their primes etc.

The fighters that arent involved , like Holyfield , Roy Jones , Vincente Saldivar etc, I believe these to e ATGs (who may have beaten some of the boxers listed) , but not elite in terms of achievement in these 8 weight classes. I dont like giving lots of weight to one win/loss , but the Barrera-Hamed fight keeps Naz out of these rankings , just the nature of the loss , and criticisms of fighting many boxers past their primes. I think Naz is a ATG of the highest order though.

I dont consider my lists here to be totaly correct , this can only ever be opinion (my featherweights are by no means set in stone and open to interpretation as I didnt give them much thought). I respect other posters' methods of ranking and would like to see what others think aswell.
