I am, of course, talking about the bonfire of vanities that was the proposed match up between Oscar De La Hoya & Manny Pacquiao. Apparently the main reason was money but one of the side issues was gloves. It would appear Oscar wanted everything in his favour despite already having a lot of advantages. I've never been one of these De La Hoya haters (and there are many) but this whole charade has really made me lose respect for him. A former 154 champ fighting a former flyweight wanted the heavier gloves & heavier split. De La Hoya has often talked about legacy & how he will be remembered but I really don't see how this fight would have added to anything besides his bank balance. No doubt he'll now turn his attention to Ricky Hatton, another fighter he'd have a lot of advantages over. Oscar's plan for the now defunct Mayweather rematch was to makes 147 again, hence why he came in at 150 for the Forbes bout. Why does he not continue with this plan & fight some of the other guys in the deep welterweight division if he's that concerned about legacy? I'd argue that he's not, his primary concern is money. I think boxing is better off without Oscar now, I'll be interested to hear what you other guys think.
I agree with most except for the highlighted part. From all the articles I've read so far, DLH acquiesced to all of Pac's demands except for the purse split!
This is correct and boxing is better off without DLH or PBF for that matter:yep Maybe the two can become tag-team partners on WWE
I'm glad. I'd have still watched the fight without a doubt, but i'd rather see credible fights that actually mean something. A Sergio Mora fight would have more credibility than a Pac fight for DLH imo.
The sad truth:deal and going along with my WWE comment it seems that it's just a show, it's almost not even real, much closer to make believe than a credible and exciting fight
Now we can have hopefully De La Hoya-Margarito and Pac versus the winner of Guzman-Campbell (hopefully Guzman)
Agreed - it's time for Oscar to fade away - he hasn't won a meaningful fight in years. He was trying to take 70% of the purse from arguably the #1 P4P fighter in the world for the second time in two years. This fight was a sham to begin with, and although I wouldn't have ordered the PPV, I'm glad it's not happening.
