A fighter from the UK that time seemingly forgot. I watched a fight of his recently, against 27-0 Efrem Calamati for the EBU Light Welterweight title... With a single punch Baret knocked him out cold for seven minutes. It was every bit as devestating as Marciano/Walcott, and supposedly Baret had done this to other fighters previously as well. Baret fought for the WBO title later in his career, but couldn't win that one. In total he only fought for 7 years, and fought from lightweight to welter, and never quite has a career defining big fight. But man, he could punch. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=26718&cat=boxer
Nice interview with him recently, http://www.britishboxing.net/news_3...-Barrett-Part-Two-of-Exclusive-Interview.html
sorry, I linked you with part 2 first. This is part 1: http://www.britishboxing.net/news_3...t-people-to-know-I-m-still-around-Part-I.html
Pat was great , i followed his whole career and went to almost all of his fights including a great fight with Danish champ Racheed Lawal at the old G-Mex centre in Manchester.. years later Lawal was murdered outside a nightclub in Denmark.. I also watched him fight for the wbo title at the same venue when he was with Mickey Duff and Terry Lawless, he fought a very awkward Manning Galloway from the usa , and lost on points in a hard one to score.. The undercard saw British cruiserweight hope Dereck Angol lost his first fight in a title chance to American Tyrone Booze of Safety Harbour Florida... Pat was always a shining star even from when he was an amateur..At the Moston Collyhurst gym in Manshester.. Very tall for his weight and a magical puncher who could take your head off if you stood in front of him.. His stablemates included heavyweights, Gary Mason, Frank Bruno, Del Waul, Henry Akinwande, Henry Warton, Denzil Browne, and Adam Fogerty... That was a great time for British grass roots level boxing.. 1990..
I watched the fight with Calamati you were talking about. God... What a brutal ko. He flew into the damn turnbuckle as his head snapped back. Looks almost like he broke his neck. One of the better kos i've seen. thanks :good
Yeah, I've never seen a fighter sparked worse than that. Graham/Jackson doesn't have anything on it. The friggin' ref tried to catch the guy as he was falling down. He knew how bad it was.
Barrett was a big waste of talent. he had good technical skills as well as huge power. It would have been interesting to see him get the shot against Chavez he was waiting on.
Thats a great point, he was indeed waiting on a Chavez match , then close British rival Andy Holligan got a Chavez match.. Barrett never got as many breaks as me should have.. He is still in the Manchester area i hear, but has often strayed to the wrong side of the tracks.. I love Pat though, he was one on his own,
Interesting interview with the Black Flash: http://www.britishboxing.net/news_3...-Barrett-Part-Two-of-Exclusive-Interview.html I think Barratt got mixed up in some criminal activities over here but I could be wrong about that.
