Chillax dude. RJJ - to say he wasnt tempted is stretching it. there's a world of difference between not chasing a fight to death and not being tempted. Hopkins. - was making money figting DLH. says it all really. and then Hopkins never gets slated for fighting people well below his weight division...... Dariusz who? (my ignorance) Jermaine Taylor - was fighting at middleweight around the time Calzaghe fought the much more highly regarded SMW Lacy... A valid name but one that only came up at a time in his career when JC would not have been the one doing the chasing of this guy. Tarver - agreed. i'd love to have seen this fight but his name is rarely mentioned, probably because he's always operated as a light heavy? Glencoffe - again would have loved to see this fight. but not a valid "name" for this argument. (PS - ever done a head to head results comparison for Glencoffe, Tarver, RJJ and Hopkins? quite interesting if you're a geek like me) Pavlik - as per Taylor. indeed even more so Winky - gimme a break
You're absoultely right. What impresses me about Calzaghe is that his resume is clear of mittigating factors. He sat atop the summit of the WBO, the most prestigious, competitive belt for 10 years, and all his big victories were no-question asked type wins - an example of a underrated boxer dethroning a great in his prime with nothing but his relentless talent (Roy Jones the next such victim). Calzaghe is the most fearless, purehearted boxer in history; a kind of throwback to 1930's Brooklyn.. Even though Hopkins persued and fought every name in and around his weightclass..he avoided the Welsh killer just cause he is something else. Don't forget about Roy Jones 10 years ago either! He may have been happy to go up to heavyweight as a super-middle, and quite competently belittle others regarded as p4p talents in the ring..means absolutely nothing, you can easy see why a man like Joe Calzaghe would have scared him. And the reason that Joe never left Britain before he was 35 is simple - all the best fighters are there! America is a nation sluggards. If you really wanna fight the best, fight in Britain! Might I add that it's great that Roy has finally had procured the balls to step up and face the real man in boxing. After Joe proves to the world that Roy is, while great, simply less talented and not in his class, there can be no questions left! Joe has beat all the best, answered all questions, and is the immutable p4p king of the sweet science now and forever! This content is protected
no it's really not a good post. the thread started made an incredibly well reasoned argument about how Joe hasn't ran from anybody around him, and has been the man at SMW for the longest time - yet this douchebag has just rehashed the same old criticisms this thread debunked into a drawn out mess. on topic, I dont blame Calzaghe for not bending over backwards to get these fights at LH years ago, which he would've had to do. I'm talking shitty, shitty purses. **** America! You only need them for money. If you can't recognise an ATG because he hasn't put bums in Vegas seats you're a tool, or an American, or an american tool.
Jones & Hopkins saw performances like this [YT]w_B1u3ywmqc[/YT] And knew their careers would go down the same path as that guy.. why bother?
Wlad would crush Joe. Joe can barely carry the extra weight to LH. His frame looks like it would really struggle to carry the amount needed at heavy. He now also lacks any real power at SM/LH, what would that be like at HW.
I see fighting Roy as the perfect way to go out for Joe - a fitting metahpor for the tenor of his entire career. If there's anything that reveals Calzaghe's dedication to being the best, a trait that the average obtuse America cannot yet admit, it's his willingness to fight Roy Jones. I mean it would be easy for him to go with an option like Pavlik or Woods, big names that would grab the attention of lay boxing enthusiasts and yielding $'s, but essentially presenting no meaningful challenge or addition to his legacy, but no, Calzaghe, with typical integrity, has manned up and taken a more hazzerdous option in a quest to give his resume even more meaning (if that's possible...) - and fight a hungry, dangerous Roy Jones; this is a coup for boxing over politics indeed. After Calzaghe's win over ANOTHER of the greatest fighters of our era (two in a row after Bernard) all intelligent boxing fans and historians will have no choice but to recogise him as a champion.
Keep telling yourself that. Fact is, Jones fought better in his fight against James "Mahfukin" Toney than Joe C. has ever fought against even the 1-1-0 freshmeat like Darren Whomever. Look the OP has a very compelling argument here, don't taint it with your stupidity. If it wasn't for the fact that I've seen Joe fight and I know he's a *****, I'd side with the original poster.
yes,i take your point on that.i was mainly answering the thread in a literal sense going on the list of super middlewights he could have fought.he should have went to the states much earlier in his career.of course some will say he didn't need to.however if we're talking legacy, especially stateside it probably hurts him.
McGrain, you're wrong in the aspect that fame is no longer that worthwhile in America. Europe has known and adored Calzaghe for years, America is only just catching up, that gives more credit to the Euros in my view, considering most champions these days are Euro.
