sure it was a FOTY candidate anyone would love to see it again but will the outcome be any different??? I dont really think so. I think Margaritos style is all wrong for cotto. I said this before the fight and I'll say it again cotto CANNOT bully someone like Margarito around the ring, he gave up size , workrate, and stamina in fighting the beast margarito , imo it would be a similar outcome
We know that Miguel isnt a fighter who cant go 12 at the pace Margarito can. Thats simply what happened tonight and I can not see a prime 27 year old Cotto in the biggest fight of his life getting any fitter than he was today. When your against a guy who is that strong, that relentless, there nothing much you can go home and "workshop". Miguel couldnt stop him from coming. Best case scenario for Cotto in a rematch is he slips by on points but takes a serious beating to do it. Is that really worth it for him? Team Cotto has to look at that, at the end of the day there are only a few fighters around who can beat Miguel so he has plenty of viable options in the future who arent Tony.
That's a pretty damn good observation. Our sport had a more passionate fan base back then. Just a bit exagerant-but not much. :good
Mayhaps, but let's see it and find out. Truth be known, either fighter has anything to lose by the rematch but only everything to gain if yu think about it: 1st. Cotto comes back so as to try and prove resiliency and whip Margo's ass. 2nd. Margo stays in character and reamins the bad-ass warrior he is by offering Cotto the rematch. Salute to both I say, fellowfan. It's a winwin deal.
Instead it will be infront of 15000 that can actually see the fight and another few hundred thousand at home. If thats a comment on the changes in attendence figures I see what you are saying but in that day 50000 people would have seen it and thats it. The rest would have to read about it. Now.. not only can fights pack out venues, they can be viewed by 10 times as many people from the comfort of their home.
There's a recent article on the scene where perhaps boxing happens in which the rematch is considered and the fight is given to Cotto. The writer feels that Cotto had what it took to win but did not employ his strengths. I feel similarly but I think Cotto really will have to reinvent himself in a way because it wasn't a small tactical problem but a big one. Sure, he was scoring in the fight and winning rounds but he was doing it while looking overwhelmed. His punches looked like they had little power because he was throwing them with the intention of avoiding Margo rather than hurting him. His evasive tactics imo only put him against the ropes as he was not very good on the backfoot. From early on I saw how quick he went to the ropes and how small was the time he spent in the center of the ring.
