The main reason he never won a title is because he never got the chance to fight for one! Langford was blind in one eye after the 1st Fred Fulton fight in1917 that is documented and in Clay Moyle's excellent biography of Sam.The sight in his other eye became progressively worse too ,this is also documented. Langford was angling for a title shot against Ketchel and to help his chances, fought him in an over the weight bout whilst wearing the cuffs. Six months later Ketchel was shot dead which, you will agree is a pretty good reason why a title fight between them did not happen . Ketchel's successors Klaus and Chip would have been outsiders at the odds to beat Sam who was adding weight . Langford would have been favourite to beat O Brien,Dillon or Levinsky for the light heavy title but never got the chance, though he did meet O Brien and easily stopped'd him in 5 rounds in1911.
Did you know Langford and Johnson singed to meet in 1909 when Johnson was champion, but Johnson pulled out of the fight? Dempsey on his way up wanted no part of Langford either. Langford's prime was 1908-1915, the champions of these times DID NOT want to fight him. That's not his fault. You could say he would have beaten Burns if given the chance. Probably not Wilard by 1915-1916, but you never know.
Nope they signed to meet in the autumn of 1908 , before Johnson became champion in December of that year .I don't know how many times you have to be corrected on this.Just as you always put SINGED! Johnson signed to defend against Langford if he won the title, his purse was to be £3000,once champion he decided he wanted more money and gave $30,000 as his price for a defense. The NSC whom he had signed to fight for wouldn't pay anywhere near that amount and the fight never happened .All easily verifiable for anyone looking for the truth!
I feel bad for the guy that he never got a title shot, but big deal, yes he was a great fighter, how great, who knows for sure because he never won one. Not because he was black, in some cases possibly, but blacks fought whites regularly, and Dempsey was afraid of no one, thats frickin funny, fighters even today talk crap say crap, I'm sure the same existed back then, Jack was a decent guy, he always said good things about most other fighter during an after his career, he could actually have said that to build up interest in a possible fight, Langford, McVea and Johnson went to cuba to promote an have a big series of fights, that never came off due to lack of interest, Johnson went home, not because he was scared, but because he was not going to get the right money, Jack Dempsey would have put an end to the Langford talk for good.
Langford and McVey didn't go to Cuba, they went to Australia and fought there, 6 fights . Langford also fought McVey in Buenos Aires and Paris. Langford was pretty much washed up when Dempsey hit his prime in the 20's
