So, Why Did You Score The Fight for CANELO ALVAREZ?

this is one thing i find fascinating. for many years the standard has been (especially on HBO) that if there's a knockdown, it's a 10-8 round. but during the fight tonight on Showtime, Malignaggi stated he scored it 10-9 in favor of Canelo instead of 10-8. If you score that round 10-9 for Canelo, you are basically saying that the round was even, 10-10, minus 1 point off of Trout's score for getting knocked down.

But the way Malignaggi was talking, he made it sound like Trout dominated the round after the knockdown. if that were the case, then the round should have been 9-9. 10-9 Trout minus the knockdown. Maybe the automatic 10-8 round when there's a knockdown was an HBO creation, but it seemed to be the generally accepted thing...until recently. (didn't the same thing happen last week, when Donaire knocked down Rigo, but Rigo jumped up quick as if it was nothing)

this just goes to show how fickle all the "standards" that the HBO / showtime commentators set can completely change over time. if you look back at all the HBO fights for the last decade, and go through every round where there's been a knockdown, how many times were those rounds scored anything other then 10-8? but in the last few months, it's as if now that standard is thrown out the window, and now you can score it any way you like it.

 

Good observation. You're right about knockdowns only deducting 1 point. If the other fighter wins the rest of the round it becomes even. People usually score 10-8 because they automatically assume the person knocked down will lose the round which is pretty unfair

 

Trout looked like he was in control coming forward, but it didn't always translate into him landing the better punches. His aggression was largely ineffective, and in the second half Canelo would often steal the rounds by landing a couple of big, accurate punches. There were a bunch of rounds were Trout outboxed Canelo handily but not 7.

You generally have to thoroughly outbox your opponent in order to reverse a knockdown and Trout was not dominant enough to make it an even round (10-10). It was definitely 10-8.

Just because you're moving forward doesn't mean you're the aggressor. Trout's punches had nothing on them and he looked timid to throw with any real intent from the outside.

Canelo didn't have to land a great deal of power shots to steal the rounds because Trout was busy either missing or just "touching" him. And whenever Alvarez became offensive, he hit Trout just about whenever he wanted, with clean, hard shots.

That knockdown round was 10-8, as Alvarez was still scoring until the bell. Trout fought back bravely, but there is no question that he got the worst of the exchanges in the round.

He just wasn't as good defensively as I expected him to be.

 

well the way i understood the automatic 10-8 round when there's a knockdown, is that getting a knockdown was theoretically twice as good as winning a round straight up. (under that standard) the automatic 10-8 round when you get a knockdown basically gave boxers an incentive to try to knock the guy down. you have to ask yourself, what's better? is it better to get a knockdown and give away the rest of the round, or to win a round straight up? if you score that round 10-9, you're scoring it the same as a round where Canelo won a close round without a knockdown. since knockdowns only happen on average about once a fight, it's hard for me to state that that round was only 10-9 for Canelo, when Canelo also won other rounds 10-9 by edging out a round that probably could have gone to either guy or been scored even.

 

I agree with this. You said it well. I think you have to literally rock the other guy and put on clinic after being knocked down to make it an even round, to make it 10-9 that round instead of 10-8. because after being knocked down, I believe it is impossible to win that round (not counting the -1 for the knockdown) unless you get a knockdown yourself. but it seems that at least in Malignaggi's mind, that he gave Trout a point back for his work in the remainder of the round. But what Trout did after being knocked down in my mind wasn't as good as the fact that Canelo knocked him down. And the fact that Trout did a chicken dance made the knockdown that much more impressive. And when Trout got up, he might have been throwing punches, but his body language was not good at all. His balance and equilibrium was off for the rest of the round.

 

Different people have different views, it's easy to see how some would have favored Canelo's cleaner more effective punches over Trout's high volume but somewhat ineffective punches and vice-versa. It was a very close fight IMO but Canelo really needs to work on pacing himself and increasing his stamina, this fight more than likely wouldn't have made it to the twelfth had he had more left in the tank after the sixth round. I'm still laughing at Canelo's defense though never thought he had it in him, but lol it felt like Trout cracked and egg on the frying pan and a piece of the shell fell into the oil and he couldn't get his hands on it.

 

and proceeded to get his ass tapped in that very same round...

Yep, had this discussion in another thread with some ******* trashing my scorecard because I scored that round 10-9. It was clearly a Trout round minus the knockdown, thus making it a 10-9 round. Some people don't know **** about boxing.

Without the knockdown perhaps a draw. Trout might of have edged it had he not missed so many shots. He'd land 1 outta 10 punches. That's where Canelo's slickness played a pivotal role by making Trout miss so much. Had Trout landed he'd bust up Canelo like he did with Cotto. Missing most of your punches shouldn't translate into a win! Punches need to actually land, but some dumbasses here dksab.
