I think Wilder has to take the fight at this point. He has more to prove than Povetkin and fighting anyone but Povetkin at this point is not a good look.

So does that mean he shouldn't get any credit? Despite him dominating his way through the finals, beating the best SHW of 2000s 4 times and winning 11 out of 12 big tournaments? Wilder may not be the one to win the olympic medal by a walk-over win but he is the one who won the easiest medal in the history of olympic boxing.

It's some of the Wilder fanboys who've been saying he should drop the title if he has to go to Russia, not the other way around.

I think you are the one who got it totally backwards, how did Povetkin's team delayed the fight for a year when it was Wilder's camp that refused the 10 mill. euros official offer and openly said he needed two more fights before taking on Povetkin?

    http://www.b0xingscene.com/wilder-not-rushed-klitschko-says-finkel--86714

Povetkin's camp only delayed it for january 2016, only because they scheduled the fight after Wilder-Duhaupas scheduled, once they realized they wouldn't get Wilder in 2015. Povetkin himself said many times after the Perez fight he wouldn't fight until he got Wilder but once Wilder's second voluntary title defence scheduled, he needed a stay busy fight himself too.

But generally, I do agree that Wilder won't be willing to drop his title, he'll want to go to Russia if it's up to him.

Mark this post and remember it whether I'm right or wrong:

It won't go to purse bids. The Russian probably stands, at best, to make $3m if it goes to bids. They know this. He'll get at least that much taking the offer.

But if it does go to purse bids, the Russians won't be throwing $15m or more at the fight and try to buy it like they did in throwing $23m at Wlad. Here's why:

    1) Povetkin's 36 years old now. There's no return on investment. They already invested $23M in trying to get him the title once. Another $15M-plus and they will have sunk close to $40M in the guy just to buy him the title. The oligarch behind him - the money man - probably gets a percentage of his purses, so Sasha would have to make, oh, more than a hundred million in purses for the guy to break even. Not going to happen.

    2) The oligarch's money is oil money. Oil is down. He's not going to stretch his margins at a time when his fortune is devalued.

    3) The ruble is also down. So $15-20M for a purse bid costs him a lot more of his fortune because of the world market.

It just doesn't add up for the Russians to overpay to get the fight there. They can work out a deal for $3M or so plus Russian TV money and make out much better.

If they believe Sasha is going to win, they should figure he can do it in America without a purse bid and not risk the big money. If they aren't sure he will win, makes even more sense to say 'Go win it in the US, Sasha' and nothing lost if he fails and a lot gained if he does win.

Povetkin had already stopped the Egyptian who pulled out of the final in 2 rounds in another tournament. And in the previous round he beat Roberto Cammarelle who is a Olympic gold, silver & bronze medalist, a 2 x world amateur gold medalist + 2 x bronze, and a 3 x European silver medalist. And the reason why Cammerelle hasn't won more golds in some of those major competitions is because he lost to Povetkin 3 or 4 times in them. And in the round prior to facing the Italian Povetkin beat the Kazakh Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov who is a Olympic silver & world amateur silver medalist.

Even the guy Povetkin beat in the first round Sergey Rozhnov was no slouch

By way of contrast, Wilder was matched up against a pair of very average North Africans in his first 2 Olympic bouts and he only scraped by the second one on countback when they finished tied at 10:10. And Wilder was losing up until the final minute when the referee deducted 2 pts of his opponent's score. Wilder was America's last remaining hope of a medal in those games

Wilder only scraped through an Olympic qualifying event by the skin of his teeth too. He won 3 of his 4 wins by razor-close scores. 2 by a single point and the other on countback.

^ nice theory on Russian market. I agree that the Russians won't come close to matching the offer for Wlad but I believe the reason is they're very confident Povetkin can beat Wilder in his backyard. So I believe the offer will be much lower.

What I really want to know is what were Don King's kickbacks from Haymon when Stiverne was champ and Wilder was his mandatory. A mandatory is only supposed to get 25 percent of a winning bid and yet somehow Al and Don delayed the purse bid twice, negotiated a deal where Wilder received the larger purse.
    Highly suspicious deal.

Wow great post Serge. Shows how some people post a half story to favor their agenda.

Bottom line Povetkin's amateur career is light years better than Wilder's. You would be a fool to argue otherwise.

Same with his pro career so far.

Wilder gets big money in this fight. Probably like 10 millions? He can't get any better anywhere else, so its good cashout fight.

I hope it happens because we'd have Fury vs Klitschko and Wilder vs Povetkin, with the winners fighting each other in a final showdown for the undisputed HW championship of the world.

A new contender will also emerge after Anthony Joshua disposes of Charles Martin and then fights the winner of Luis Ortiz vs Tony Thompson.

I just hope Al Haymon does not pull with Wilder what Rock Newman did with Ridd-ick Bowe. Dropping the belt to avoid Lennox Lewis I think was the beginning of the end for his career. Totally softened him and wrecked his confidence too. I think the same would happen to Wilder if they don't show anymore faith in him than to think he can't beat Povetkin.

You need to stop thinking that Big Al gives a **** about his fighters or cares for them.
    He doesn't.

Quillin is still very happy that Al pulled him out of that Korobov fight. He went on to do bigger and better things and almost made the same amount of money since then in his next 3 fights combined
