This is two atomic punchers colliding @ 135 lbs. The Lew Jenkins, sober who flattened Lou Ambers twice, or the lightweight edition of prime Joe Louis. TIMBER ? Not for the faint hearted...
Arguello. He had a very good chin and a better defence. Also he had the better technique and is the more intelligent fighter. He may take a more cautious approach and get Lew when he is coming in. Can“t rule out Jenkins though. Him beating Ambers twice is big, even so Ambers was on his way out, and with his punch it can be nighty-night anytime.
This fight was fought already, albeit with the Hawaiian version of Jenkins in Andy Ganigan. They were so similar. KO power in either hand, a bit reckless and shaky in the chin dept. Still, Ganigan managed to deck Arguello before being KO'd himself in the 5th. The difference was chin, Arguello could handle these big shots whereas a Ganigan or Jenkins would not. Scartissue
Ganigan was the first name I thought of too when I saw Burt's thread. However, Andy had a weird southpaw slugging style when Alexis admitted confused him. Sweetwater Lew was orthodox. Only a peaking monster Pryor was able to stop Arguello after he got his career on track. Jenkins may well deck him, but the sharpshooting Alexis showed with Ganigan how dangerous he could be when under fire. Elizondo took the fight right to Arguello on the ropes and got ripped apart. Exciting while it lasts, but Lew would succumb, and it could just as easily come from body shots, as happened to Ganigan.
