Ashamed for what? Not many people doubted the legitimacy of him hurting his leg. What people have said is that he reaped what he sowed by being so out of shape (which obviously had to have been at least partially causal).
They dont but they can have results immediately if they want, and normally for athletes they have them very quickly.

Destroyed? I did the same thing the first two minutes of an athletic season and PLAYED(hobbled) the whole season. Oh, and tore my MCL as well.
