Saul Rodriguez vs. Dominic Coca, 6 rounds @ super featherweight

 

Round 1

Rodriguez is placing the jab on Coca's face as he bounces around. The tattooed veteran paces left to right like a lion, feigning right hands and then whipping in left hooks to the body as he darts in and out. Rodriguez turns and faces him coolly, keeping the jab on him and responding in kind with harder left hooks to the body.

As of April he was still a teenager but had already fought nine times.

 

Round 2

Rodriguez is keeping the jab fixed on Coca's head like a paddle-ball on a string even as Coca zigzags around him, rising and falling. 1-2 by Rodriguez as Coca dives in to grab. Big flurry of underhanded body shots by Coca, driving Rodriguez into the ropes and gaining confidence. He smothers himself a bit and digs in some elbows & forearms while continuing to wing in powerful but telegraphed body shots. The ref calls a break. Rodriguez jabs from mid-range. More big scooping body shots by Coca diving in. Rodriguez seems a little bothered, wincing and showing his gum shield as he backs up and jabs.

10-9 Rodriguez but that was better from Coca.

20-18 Rodriguez

 

Round 3

Rodriguez is finding his groove, tearing into Coca with jabs, crosses and hooks. Coca is pasted into the ropes and flopping around, valiantly firing back with haphazard lobs. Big combinations by Rodriguez, hurting Coca throughout the round and keeping him staggering with often a one-legged hop miraculously keeping him from plummeting.

Alejandro Perez vs. Edgar Riovalle, 10 rounds @ super featherweight

 

It may not have been the corner that retired Coca, actually. They showed a replay of what transpired during the commercial break and it seems ref Caiz had seen enough punishment dished out. I'm fine with the stoppage as Coca was getting his ass kicked, but why not do it during instead of after the bell? :huh

 

Saul Rodriguez is a nice looking prospect, but I'll be pissed if they give his showcase airtime but leave Yunier Dorticos and/or Trevor McCumby off TV.

 

I'm a huge fan of Alejandro "The Scorpion" Perez.

He was on his way to being a gatekeeper with a disappointing start to his career, and turned it around starting with the explosive surprise KO1 of Escalante, followed by a very game performance losing to Diego Magdaleno, destroying former prospect Derrick Wilson, and beating Hovhannisyan on ShoBox. Really tough kid and he can both throw bombs and box tidily.

This should be a pretty standard walk in the park for him. Riovalle is here to lose, something he is comfortable doing. He springs the odd upset, but against nobody Perez's caliber.

 

Round 1

Perez is jabbing and forking in right uppercuts to the body, then jogging on his toes to his left. Riovalle is hunched up tightly, shoulders at his cheeks and guard a few inches in front of his chin, stepping in on very skinny legs and constantly rocking back and forth to keep his balance as he doubles and triples his jab into the air. Perez swipes a long hook from outside, missing as Riovalle backs up. Counter left hook by Riovalle. Not much in the round.

I just noticed the back of Riovalle's trunks say "Basura".


(that is Spanish for "rubbish")


The guy has a sense of humor about his stature in the sport, that's pretty cool. :yep
