Solo Boxeo: Diego Magdaleno vs. Jorge Pazos & Esquiva Falcão vs. Josh Robertson RBR

Round 4

Falcão is using high right jab feints to set up the left hand lead on the belly. Robertson is rocked by a right hook while putting his left jab, caught with hand in the cookie jar. Falcão is putting together right hooks and chopping lefts up top, battering Robertson's arms. Head clash as Robertson leans down, leading with his forearms to press down on Falcão. Warning. 1-1-2 on the face by Falcão. Falcão is digging with the right hook on the doughy abdominal cavity of Robertson. Hard left hands up top by Falcão. Body shots landing at an almost 100% clip, with head shots beginning to catch up. Robertson is backing up, hurt. Falcão whips a left uppercut into his midsection. Robertson backs up and forks out an underhanded right into the side of Falcão's jaw, but Falcão never stops moving forward putting together power shots in combination to head and body. Robertson taking lots of damage on the run. Finally the ref moves in.

TKO4!!

 

I can understand a Boxrec editor leaving out a tilde when inputting Falcão's name, but they completely butchered the spelling of it too.

Falaco? Not only does the second A not have the squiggly line over it, the placement is wrong. :roll:

 

Anyway, that has to be considered a satisfying beginning to Falcão's career. Not much can be read into beating up the likes of Robertson, but he is six foot plus (looking to have about 3" on Falcão, putting him at 6'1") and was if nothing else highly reluctant to get knocked out.

There were of course minor points to nitpick, as is to be expected, and there will be for a little while as Falcão irons out the kinks and sheds his amateur style's trappings (though he already had seemed close to pro-ready for some time), but no glaring issues and nothing to detract from how promising he looks. If he got a bit overanxious in his attacks, sometimes failing to sit down on shots or staying tight defensively, it can be attributed to Robertson's unwillingness to fight and needing to be shucked like a stubborn oyster.

 

Diego Magdaleno vs. Jorge Pazos, 10 rounds @ lightweight

 

Round 1

Magdaleno is doubling his right jab to the body, stalking Pazos around the ring. A couple of right jabs downstairs set up a looping left on the far hip as Pazos circles away, giving Magdaleno a wide berth. Pazos is dipping in place, slightly bending his knees to start dropping and gauge Magdaleno's reaction. Magdaleno doesn't take the bait, just watching and slowly but surely closing the distance, like a crocodile swimming toward a possible meal. Pazos does another curtsying body-feint and starts to spring aside away from the ropes but Magdaleno strikes tootsweet with a left hand lead on the chest and big right hook on the chin. Pazos flurries with wide hooks while scrambling away with lateral steps.

Round 2

Magdaleno is doubling his right jab to the body and spearing a 1-2 up top. Pazos is shuffling with his feet wide apart, scurrying left and throwing a pair of wide hooks in Magdaleno's path. Body to head by Magdaleno, consistently throwing straight punches. Pazos backs into a corner, waiting for Magdaleno, faking a move in either direction, and then catches Magdaleno with a left hook on the cheek. Magdaleno keeps pressuring, feeling out distance with the right jab up top as Pazos circles again into the ropes. Left hand to the body by Magdaleno falling in. Pazos grabs Magdaleno and tosses him backward. Pazos is brushing the air with his left jab. Magdaleno hits it with his right jab. Hard left on the body by Magdaleno driving Pazos into a corner. Left uppercut on the body by Magdaleno as Pazos is skipping away, back sliding along the ropes and hands down to intercept where Magdaleno usually puts his straight body shots.

Round 3

Magdaleno is diving in with lefts on the body and coming upstairs with the right hook. Pazos is circling out to the ropes and defending himself with sweeping hooks when Magdaleno comes in. Nice exchanges, Magdaleno getting the best of all of them with his quicker and stiffer and more accurate punching. Uppercuts traded as Magdaleno pushes Pazos into the ropes. BIG double right hook on the ribcage by Magdaleno charging in. Pazos counters with his back on the ropes with a wide right uppercut and left hook over the scalp but Magdaleno punctuates each right hook on the body with a HARD straight left on the nose, the second landing incredibly flush. Pazos goes down from the accumulation of the four blows but especially that last left hand on the face. Pazos beats the count and trots along the ropes for the rest of the round with Magdaleno hunting for body shots.

Round 4

Magdaleno puts up the right jab and carries himself in on a left uppercut. Pazos holds and hits Magdaleno with several right uppercuts while clasping him close. Break ordered. Magdaleno is stalking, putting the right jab up, feinting with it. Hard right hooks on the body by Magdaleno. Pazos is doubling over from them, but is able to shuffle his feet enough to escape or hold before Magdaleno can string more than a few together. Magdaleno whips in a left hand and Pazos is able to partially block it while getting knocked back into the ropes and bouncing off them, using the momentum to speedily navigate past Magdaleno. Pazos watches Magdaleno at mid-range, head-faking a lateral move in either direction. Pazos leans to his right and Magdaleno whips a left at him, just grazing his face as Pazos gets his gloves in the way and flinches. Right hooks on the body by Magdaleno. Pazos winces and moves to the ropes. Magdaleno chases with a left on the body, caught partially on the arms but Pazos has already given up and started going to a knee. He takes a full count, willingly.

KO4!

 

A couple of KO4s, not a bad show.

Robertson and Pazos while nothing special were tough outs and were taken out pretty emphatically.

I'd give both Magdaleno & Falcão at worst a B+.

Jessie Magdaleno vs. Roberto Castaneda, 8 rounds @ featherweight

 

Round 1

Magdaleno is sticking the hard right jab up into Castaneda's face, extending it past the longer left arm of the lanky Castaneda and scoring with an aggressive in-step. Left hands up top by Magdaleno, missing as Castaneda pulls his head away and turns, but very close. Magdaleno is darting in rapidly with the right jab and surprising Castaneda with his abrupt changes in velocity. Right hook on the hip and line drive left hand by Magdaleno. Castaneda ducks and covers. Castaneda is turning his left mitt outward and holding it a few inches away from his body to swat down and catch punches. Slow left hook by Castaneda on the outside, ducked as Magdaleno dives in on him at the bell.

Round 2

Magdaleno is jabbing the face and body of Castaneda. BIG right hooks by Magdaleno, delivering them initially disguised as jabs and then snapping them into hooks after covering half the distance. HARD combination by Magdaleno exploding on Castaneda and making him cover up on the ropes. Big right and left uppercuts on the body. Castaneda holds, arms barring the way to prevent Magdaleno from bringing his punches up to the head. Break called and Castaneda moves away. Magdaleno darts in and out with the 1-1-2 up top. Castaneda tries pressing Magdaleno into a corner with a right hand but Magdaleno gives him a dusting with both hands, landing a few behind the head. Castaneda goes down and it's ruled a knockdown though he complains. Big flurry by Magdaleno as Castaneda once again tries plowing him into a corner. Fast hooks into the body by Magdaleno, smacking Castaneda on either side of the face as he climbs up with them. Castaneda goes down again. Castaneda is up and pressing behind the left jab. Magdaleno flurries on his face and Castaneda is down! Glove brushed the canvas. Ref didn't see it so no call. Castaneda plays it cool and just keeps punching at Magdaleno. This earns him a big counter left uppercut on the bottom of the chin, rocking him.

Round 3

Magdaleno is throwing high right jabs and hooks, then ducking and backing out and catching the 1-2s of Castaneda on the high guard. Magdaleno ties up as Castaneda marches into him, threatening with a jab, waving the left out as he comes in. BIG right hook by Magdaleno as Castaneda tries walking in on him again. Castaneda is hit with a left uppercut and another big right hook while crowding Magdaleno onto the ropes but is still not discouraged. Castaneda is determined to bully the smaller but eminently faster and more powerful man no matter the increasingly severe collateral damage.
