    Round 5

Russell stops to appraise Landeros a bit, watching him intently with his hands at his sides from a couple of steps away as Landeros circles warily. Russell takes aim and catapults several right jabs to the body and hard 1-2's between the gloves. Russell isn't throwing more than 3 punches at a time, though (which is when he really shines). Now a few shoeshines from Russell, just reaching in and slapping at about 60% of his usual speed. Russell may be tuckered out, just slightly. Landeros hangs at mid-range and pops a half-serious jab, trying to make Russell chase him. Landeros isn't interested in trading, stepping back and well clear whenever Russell attacks. Landeros' gameplan seems to be to get Russell to spend energy coming forward throwing those fast combos. Landeros dances around the ring, holding his mouthpiece halfway out of his mouth between his teeth and waiting for the bell to sound, blocking punches in a corner with his butt rested against the turnbuckle until it does.

Yeah, good call. I just surmised he was trying to let Russell gas out to maybe regroup and stop him late...but it's just as likely he's playing to lose on points.

    Round 6

Russell now leads with right hooks coming forward. Landeros lacks the footwork to keep eluding him for long, and is caught against the ropes with a hard left hook to the body. Russell now forces his punches through with extra emphasis, tagging Landeros hard with a left cross to the face. Landeros has his hands up, but that's where they're staying. Nothing coming back. Russell is still cautious, unsure wtf Landeros' game is and maybe worried about a big counter. He's got nothing to worry about. Russell comes banging his way in, destroying Landeros' body with fast curling shots down and around the sides. Bogus low blow warning from the ref. That might need a replay. It did not seem low. Landeros purports to be OK and keeps dancing around the ring until the ten-second clap. JUST THEN RUSSELL STUNS HIM and has him against the ropes. Fast punches precipitate all over Landeros, who bravely splits his guard and exposes his chin to toss some leather back in a desperate last-ditch attempt to win.

    60-53 Russell

    Joe Martinez has the scores...

All three: 60-53 for Russell Jr.

He looks pretty mad, actually. He wanted that knockout tonight.

Gary looked good tonight, but it appeared he was getting a bit tired as he was letting his hands hang low a lot in the 5th and 6th rounds and he was throwing a lot of pitty pat shots. That could be dangerous as he could've easily been countered. But, all in all, a good win because it gave him rounds.

I'd like to see him move his feet more so that he can better set up angles to take advantage of his fantastic speed and precision punching. The fact that he's a southpaw only adds to his dimensions.

Sky's the limit for him as he is really talented and can improve. I just hope he's handled correctly because USA has a gem of a fighter @ flyweight.

    Main event.

The crowd is very firmly behind Prince Eloy Perez.

Yeah. I think after the third round he was really just annoyed to have not gotten it over with already.

Landeros just isn't someone you can expect to bowl over, though. Too much of a veteran, with too many survival tactics.

    Round 1

Rodriguez is very thrifty, taking short and even steps around the much smaller Perez and firing a smattering of left jabs. Perez busily tries to high-jab his way in, and gets softly tapped on the nose with the door-knocker jab of Rodriguez while trying to dig a 1-2 to that long body. Rodriguez is keeping distance very well, and at one point almost holding Perez back with his wrist pressed against his forehead as though he were a little kid. Perez lunges inside with a wild right haymaker that was somewhat set up with a lazy jab. Perez throws another sloppy three punch combo, left-right-left. Perez very inaccurate this round.

    10-9 Rodriguez

    Round 2

They jab and land together. Perez is initiating but Rodriguez is matching him jab for jab and hitting him as quickly as they start coming his way. Rodriguez just has wide open space to scout Perez's advances and react in a timely fashion. Perez could do well to watch some tapes of Omar Narvaez (particularly his performance earlier tonight) to find out how to deal with taller boxers denying you any ground. Rodriguez boxing very nicely with his long jab, and using just enough right hands to keep Perez worried about them without relying on the punch or squandering much energy on them. Rodriguez laughs at himself whenever he misses a right hand with Perez ducking. Perez throws a jab under Rodriguez's and tries to quickly hook off of it and into Rodriguez's ribs but finds the moving target is just too far off.

    20-18 Rodriguez

    Round 3

Perez immediately starts crowding him, throwing hard lancing blows on the inside as Rodriguez traverses the ropes. Perez keeps following him back in the center area, leading with his jab and making Rodriguez continue moving to keep his ribs clear. Perez really targets the body, training his jab on it and pushing Rodriguez even further back with low rights. Rodriguez finally comes alive with a sort of meandering slapping triplet of left hooks up high. Rodriguez gets back to circling and trying to assert his jab but he's already lost the round unless he scores a knockdown. Perez has just been too busy and too aggressive (but only landed a couple of body jabs, which is still more than Rod).

    10-9 Perez

    29-28 Rodriguez

    Round 4

Perez keeps laying it on, driving Rodriguez back with snappy (but overreaching) jabs and rights. Rodriguez leaves a trickle of jabs as he backs up, until he hits the ropes and comes towering over Perez with a series of pawing shots...all ducked. Perez looks to be in a groove, feeling confident despite not landing much. Perez ducks Rodriguez's long jabs now, and gets inside to land a couple of his own. Good left hook by Perez just grazes. NICE hook near the end of the round as Perez leaps in and catches Rodriguez hanging by the ropes.

    38-38

    Round 5

Perez seems to be getting stronger, as Rodriguez shrinks and wilts. Perez is rolling around at the end of Rodriguez's jab, slipping it pretty easily (especially with the lack of velocity on it now). Perez is slowly but surely bossing Rodriguez around the ring, jabbing up into his face. Hard left hook/right hand combo to the chin and chest by Perez!! Rodriguez keeps pawing with his jab and missing, but uses a wayward pair of them to triangulate on Perez's head and line up a good right hand. Perez gets right back in his face, left arm in an invisible sling at his side...defending with just head movement as he jabs his way in and causes Rodriguez to flee nonstop.

    48-47 Perez
