Orthodox vs. southpaw, both fast counter-punchers but they're going to war.

 

Ruiz vs. Zarate was an incredible battle. Had I not been checking out the end of Narvaez vs. Hisataka this would have kept me riveted, and I'm very glad to have it on DVR for review later.

Mild upset. Ruiz falls to 9-1 (4). Zarate improves to 6-1 (none by KO).

Zarate's prior loss - which came in June - was a shutout at the hands of very talented (but light hitting) unbeaten prospect Tramaine Williams, of whom I got a glimpse on last week's Solo Boxeo, the Juan Diaz vs. Adailton De Jesus undercard.

 

Sanchez has a pretty record to go along with his pretty boyish face - but Superman Findley has been known to spring an upset and cauliflower a nose or two in his day. :yep

 

25-0 (20) Sanchez actually has a few recognizable names on his record - but they also happen to be the few people who took him the distance.

Guys like 2-time world title challenger Jaime Barboza (ridiculous as that is), Richard Gutierrez, Marcus Upshaw...all wide decisions.

So he isn't just a crusher of tomato cans - but can he deal with a serious, game, and heavy-handed opponent like Findley? :think

Round 1

Findley is putting up a jab from the crouch. Sanchez circles a few steps and pauses to drop a 1-2 on the much shorter man. Sanchez changes directions and parries a few jabs with his right arm coming down like a drawbridge. The tall southpaw works in some long left uppercuts from outside while stepping around Findley. Sanchez fakes to his left, bounces to his right and then trots left again, faking Findley out. Long right jabs by Sanchez from out of Findley's range. Sanchez is keeping a distance for now, circling on the perimeter and feeling Findley out. Findley ducks under a right jab and reaches out for the body with both hands. Light 1-2 by Sanchez before circling quickly to his right to escape a corner as Findley presses in low.

Round 2

Findley is hurt by a left uppercut!! He clinches. Break ordered. Sanchez opens up! Big straight combination on the crown as Findley sinks his weight back and covers up. Sanchez pecks away on him. Findley slides along the ropes and manages to switch out, getting to center ring and walking Sanchez into the ropes. Sanchez is still the aggressor, even moving backwards, throwing a high volume of straight punches and smoothly leaning back to dodge Findley's lunges. Findley jumps in and holds, then hammers Sanchez on the side with his right hand while clasping Sanchez in tight with the left. Sanchez jabs into Findley's guard, then changes direction moving laterally. Findley walks forward, gloves up, then ducks a right jab and nods at Sanchez to bring the heat. Sanchez does so. Long combos. Findley hurt and backing into the ropes. Findley ducks and swoops to one side. Shoulder roll by Findley backing out, but with shaky balance. Big 1-2 by Sanchez. Findley throws with him at the bell, loading up on a right hand as the ref gets between them.

Round 3

Findley is fronting as though he is looking to exchange jabs at mid-range, trotting in and beginning to unroll his left, but then running outside to draw Sanchez in, probably hoping to catch him with a well-timed right. Sanchez is careful in his approach, keeping the long right jab out ahead of him to scout a path. Findley is caught with the rangy 1-2 even as he leans back and raises both gloves in the way. Clinch as Findley dives in and encircles the waist of Sanchez. Break. Right jabs by Sanchez. Findley stands pat in front of him, goalposts up. Right jabs to the guard and left uppercuts to the body by Sanchez coming forward. Findley is knocked back into the ropes, but stays defensively alert.

Round 4

Findley is rushing in and clobbering over the top with his right hand, rushing Sanchez into the ropes. Sanchez is glad for it, landing right hooks and plunging straight lefts on the shorter man as he comes in. Findley rethinks it, jabbing from outside. This favors Sanchez. Findley down, slip. Sanchez bobs from side to side. Straight left by Sanchez. Long reaching right jab by Sanchez as Findley steps out and tilts his head back. Sanchez keeps the distance consistent with quick footwork as Findley tanks in with a high guard. Sanchez keeps the right jab flowing.

Round 5

Findley is walking into left hand leads and getting turned aside with right hooks when Sanchez leaps sidelong by him. Embarrassing discrepancy in agility here, to go along with the freakish height and reach advantage held by Sanchez. Findley is nailed by a left hand and right hook while crouching in front of Sanchez. Findley rolls his head around to minimize the punches' impact but they are still clean. Findley is warned for a rabbit punch after rushing inside and clubbing down. Long right jab by Sanchez. Body hook by Sanchez. Findley sticks a right to the body at the bell.

Round 6

Findley is caught with a left hand walking forward despite keeping both hands up. Sanchez is just penetrating with the jab and cross while pushing off the balls of his feet to keep plenty of space betwixt them. Big right hook by Sanchez, turning Findley's head but not bothering him beyond that. Findley keeps walking forward with a turtle shell. Sanchez flurries out of clinches as Findley presses in. Big left uppercut to the chest by Sanchez. Findley holds and whacks across Sanchez's back with his free left hand. Sanchez shows the right, but drops it before extending it and instead stuffs a straight left into Findley's grill. The ref warns Findley for something. Findley backs up to the ropes as Sanchez digs a hard right hook under his elbow. 1-2 by Sanchez, blocked on the pinned forearms of Findley.

Round 7

Findley is getting cowed by the long right jab and sneaky quick left cross of Sanchez, driven into a corner where he ducks and covers. Pretty uneventful as Sanchez flurries economically on the scarce available target shown with Findley keeping on a leather mask and elbows covering his ribs. Sanchez is putting on all the offense, in bursts, from outside.
