Round 2

Gonzalez is pumping that jab into Laryea's face. Laryea tries ducking, but just gets jabbed across the top of the curly faux-hawk he's got going on. Gonzalez is patient on the outside, predatory. Laryea steps to him and gets countered with a stiff jab to the chin while throwing his own jab. Gonzalez puts an uppercut behind the jab stepping in momentarily before backing up again. Laryea misses a wild left hook. Gonzalez is calm and collected, in control.

Laryea quit on his stool; did not answer the bell to start the third round. :-(

He seems to have maybe been claiming a hand injury? :conf

More like a pride injury. Gonzalez owned him for 6'.

Not that it would have changed the outcome, Gonzo was clearly the better man tonight. Whipped that ass both rounds.

Andres Navarro vs. Rafael Gonzalez, 8 rounds @ lightweight

 

This Gonzalez is 7-0 (6)

His opponent is 6-4 (4) and eight years his senior...and SIX INCHES shorter.

A couple of big hitters in there, but clearly one being fed to the other.


Let's see if it plays out according to the script...

 

Rafael "Ali Funeka" Gonzalez has a nice jab to the body, but I'm not seeing that power so far in the 1st.

 

Round 1

Gonzalez jabs the body, circles out, and blocks the high 1-2 of Navarro. Gonzalez keeps pumping that jab and loops a right hand to the side of the head as Navarro works his way in behind a high left jab and some body shots. Navarro is warned for leading with his head, which he wasn't truly doing. Wild shots up top by Navarro. Gonzalez is pushed back onto the ropes and eats a few jabs and rights. Uppercut by Gonzalez to the body. Navarro throws a wild overhand right, over Gonzalez's head. Gonzales gets his jab going and is able to keep Navarro out for a few moments. Navarro is being a pest, missing lots of overhands but pushing Gonzalez back into a corner. 1-2 to the body by Navarro. Uppercut to the chin by Gonzales from the corner.

Round 2

Gonzalez is giving up his height, falling in a bit as he throws jabs and uppercuts with his chin hanging out. Fortunately for him Navarro is sloppy and misses some hooks over his head. Gonzalez ducks in and lets some Navarro right hands scrape across his back. Gonzalez throws an uppercut to get off the ropes. Jab to the guard by Navarro. Gonzalez jabs the body and steps left. Hard 1-2 to the guard by Navarro. Gonzalez circles off the ropes and lands a left and right uppercut paired up to the body. Navarro again throws a hard 1-2 up top but keeps getting blocked and countered with uppercuts. Gonzalez is edging these rounds despite getting constantly pushed to the ropes.

Round 3

Gonzalez is still blocking most of Navarro's shots, but getting outworked. A few jabs is all it takes for Gonzalez to keep Navarro held outside but he just isn't doing it consistently. Navarro gets emboldened by Gonzalez's low output and comes forward throwing combos at his guard. Gonzalez leans back and blocks, or twists his skinny frame around and shrinks back against the ropes to make Navarro miss. Jabs and counter uppercuts landing for Gonzalez when he bothers throwing back. Navarro the aggressor, but ineffective.

30-27 Gonzalez

 

Round 4

Navarro is pushing Gonzalez back to the ropes and training his fists on his head, but Gonzalez is finally figuring out how to utilize his height by hanging back and jabbing. Navarro nods his approval to the young prospect after eating a few "no trespassing" jabs. Gonzalez exchanges some sloppy hooks with Navarro on the inside, both landing more with the crook of their arms than with knuckle. Very ugly. Navarro rips off a big combo to the face, his best moment of the fight landing a few overhands and uppercuts. Gonzalez leans back against the ropes and loads up on a right hand. Navarro turns southpaw and stuffs some right jabs into Gonzalez's face. Navarro lets his hands go all over Gonzalez, drowning him against the ropes.

Round 5

Navarro is throwing HARD shots, reckless and wild but forcing Gonzalez back to the ropes and keeping the Toa Baja crowd on its feet. Gonzalez is getting pushed back to the ropes, with jabs and wayward right hands colliding with his jaw, throwing counter uppercuts but not keeping Navarro off. Navarro is slapping up top and forcing his way inside. Gonzalez is getting folded up, unable to establish his range or dictate the fight's pace. Navarro is just unloading on him up close, all up in his chest.

Round 6

Gonzalez has rediscovered his jab. He keeps Navarro held outside with it, and curls a right hand over the top bouncing off Navarro's forehead. Navarro can't close the distance anymore to harry Gonzalez, so he jumps in past the jab (eating a few) and holds. Gonzalez leans his Olive Oyl body down on the shorter man, and presses his bony weight on him. Uppercuts to the body on the inside by Gonzalez. Navarro tries to knock him back with looping rights but Gonzalez is pushing ahead with almost drunken insistence. Navarro is using some forearm, getting them up into Gonzalez's chin and working combos to the body, but Gonzalez is forcing him back slowly but surely and landing uppercuts when Navarro opens up.

Round 7

Navarro misses several left hooks, trying to press Gonzalez back. Gonzalez gets his jab going, then lands a flush uppercut. Navarro is throwing wild shots, looping both fists in haphazardly. Gonzalez has his back to the ropes but is landing uppercuts while slipping shots as he drops his head down to the side. Right hand by Navarro, rattling Gonzalez's skull but not slowing him down as Gonzalez leans into him. Body shots by Gonzalez as he pushes him back chest to chest. The referee gets in to spatula them apart. Navarro is letting his hands go, very busy, but sloppy. Gonzalez holds and chops him with a right to the kidney. Navarro backs up and then skips in close to clinch as Gonzalez keeps coming. Body shots and a left hook to the face by Navarro as Gonzalez looks to land a pendulum uppercut.
