Solo Boxeo: Luis Ramos Jr vs. Jose Hernandez & James Kirkland vs. Jhon Berrio RBR

Round 1

Hernandez lands a right to the body and then steps outside. Ramos is much shorter. They're both listed as 5'8" but that is bull****. Ramos is at least 2-3" shorter. Ramos flicks out a few quick combos. Hernandez comes forward and digs to the body with his right while jabbing straight out into Ramos' face. Ramos waits for Hernandez to edge in close and then lurches forward with a high-reaching 1-2 to back him off. The two exchange hard body shots on the inside, with Hernandez working his right uppercut. Ramos shoots a right hand that falls just short, with Hernandez then jabbing him in the face as he pulls back. Hernandez pressures Ramos into a corner and throws some straight shots that Ramos ducks. Ramos starts thrusting his jab up into Loco's face. Hernandez advances and Ramos quickly sidesteps him, smacking him with the jab. Hernandez grabs Ramos behind the head with his left and pulls him chin-first into a short right uppercut just as the bell.

Nice opening round!!

 

SMW again. He weighed 163.5, and Berrio was two pounds lighter.

 

Round 2

Hernandez down! No, it was a slip. Hernandez comes back and lands several hard hooks to the body, mixing in his right uppercut straight up the middle. Ramos slides his feet back and starts jabbing out to keep Hernandez at bay. Hernandez is coming forward and throwing hard hooks and uppercuts, focusing on the body. Ramos doubles his jab and turns Hernandez. Left uppercut is attempted by Ramos from the outside, but his arms are too short. Hernandez spanks him with some right hands on the back of the belt line. Ramos jabs and then throws a quick right hand lead, not landing but backing Hernandez off. Hernandez comes right back and lands a few right hands across the side of Ramos' head. Ramos flashes out a quick combo on the inside. He's landing his quick right hand but little else. Hernandez is just towering over him as he stalks his way inside. Hernandez lands a right hand before the bell.

Round 3

Hernandez comes forward and lands a HARD 1-2 to the chin that Ramos takes pretty well despite getting battered into the ropes. Ramos circles back out to the middle of the ring and starts landing jabs and quick rights despite giving up so much height and reach. Hernandez lands one of his uppercuts flush and again gives Ramos something to think about. Ramos still keeps coming forward, landing his own left uppercut and some looping lefts around the side. Hernandez throws a long 1-2 from a few paces out but has his hands pushed away. Ramos circles and shrimps his body up to make a small target. Hard left hand by Ramos on the chin. Hernandez is trying to reach across the ring to touch Ramos with his left jab. Ramos is checking Hernandez with the right hook as he jabs forward. Ramos is just flashing his hands now, moving in and out.

Round 4

Ramos is staying behind his right jab, working well behind it and landing some left uppercuts when Hernandez breathes down his neck and blocking the long straight shots of Hernandez coming in. Ramos sweeps with a right hook whenever Hernandez throws a lone lazy jab, obscuring his vision so he can't bring the right cross over. Ramos is getting bold with the left uppercut, throwing it from too far out with his stubby little arms. Both men get a little rough, throwing a lot of elbows on the inside. Ramos backs off toward a corner and Hernandez is right on top of him, trying to work the body. Ramos gets some distance and lands a BEAUTIFUL three punch combo to the face, punctuated by a thunderous right hook. Hernandez lost his mouthpiece and the ref pauses to have it put back in. Hernandez is furious and chases Ramos into the ropes with a frenzied assault but the bell rings. That doesn't stop Hernandez from throwing at least four or five more punches as we fade to commercial.

Round 5

Hernandez is ripping shots out with both arms but suffering from a lack of space to get off. Ramos is just poking up through the gap with short jabs and lefts, squatting down and strafing to either side to keep Hernandez looking for him. Hernandez reaches down and slaps him with a pair of hard hip shots. Ramos stays in front of him, jabbing out of a guard. Hernandez isn't pressuring as effectively this round. Ramos ties him up when Hernandez starts letting his hands go. Ramos is jabbing and moving. Ramos lands a quick left hand lead and then doubles it when it lands flush, performing a little knock-knock joke at Hernandez' expense.

Round 6

Hernandez comes forward and throws hard right hands and left hooks, clipping Ramos a few times as he backs him to the ropes. Ramos is fighting back as long as it takes to get back out in the open, then jabbing up at the taller man and turning his shoulder in to absorb shots as he circles. Hernandez is now lunging with his 1-2, a little tired. The referee warns Hernandez for violently palm-shoving Ramos on the inside. Hernandez wings out a hard hook but it's lost in Ramos' shoulderblade area. Hernandez keeps coming forward throwing straight punches, but Ramos is just a step and a half ahead of him leaving a trail of right jabs. Ramos crouches in front of him and dodges a right hand. Hernandez tries a short hook but only barely touches Ramos. A thudding right hand does land for Hernandez a moment later, just before the end of the round.

 

Round 7

Hernandez comes forward pumping his right hand. Ramos hugs the ropes and throws a few 1-2s to try and slow Hernandez down. Hernandez lands a HARD right hand over the top, that shakes some sweat out of Ramos' hair. Hernandez now pours on some hellish body shots. Ramos ducks down and is pushed through the ropes. Ramos comes back and starts pumping his left hand out behind his jab and just trading with Hernandez on the inside. Both land cleanly. Ramos starts to curl his shots down to the body. Hard hooking right hand to the face by Ramos. Hernandez is staggered!! Hernandez keeps warring back, from against the ropes!! Hernandez lobs hard jabs and rights at Ramos, missing. Ramos tries a big right hook anticipating Hernandez ducking down but just slices air as Hernandez pulls himself back up at the last second.

 

Round 8

Hernandez opens with a right but Ramos swats it aside. Hernandez then tries a wild left hook but doesn't come close. Ramos triples his jab coming forward to meet Hernandez, and has the more assertive body language. Ramos is a little pitbull coming forward with his right hook snapping out repeatedly. Hernandez is still throwing tons of punches, and most of them are still pretty damn hard. A right hand crashes into Ramos' ear. Ramos works his way inside and the two fight out of a clinch, Hernandez throwing uppercuts. Ramos sticks out his left hand lead and then pulls back to the outside. Ramos is taking some time off here. Hernandez steps through with a nasty right hand and catches Ramos flush. Hernandez keeps coming and continues to hit Ramos with a precipitation of fists. Ramos backpedals to the ropes and tries to leap forward to clinch but Hernandez just knocks him back with nonstop punches and forces him to trade until the bell.

78-74 Ramos

 

This was actually a pretty impressive performance from Ramos, overall.

He both boxed and brawled. When he did the latter, he showed a great chin. When he did the former, he showed pretty solid defense.

He overcame a much bigger and stronger guy, and one who is incredibly tough and hurt him a couple of times along the way.
