    Round 4

Avila is keeping careful distance, jabbing at Lopez high and low. Right downstairs by Avila, still maintaining a healthy separation. Avila is controlling the distance and keeping it a low-output fight both ways. Lopez suddenly parachutes in with a big overhand right and SCORES. Avila maintains his composure and keeps jabbing. Not quite enough by Lopez.

    10-9 Avila

    40-35 Avila

Although my card doesn't reflect it, this is one of the tougher outings of Tino Avila's career to date.

    ...and it's only halfway over.

    Round 5

Avila is drawing Lopez into big left hooks. Carefully positioning himself out of Lopez's reach, Avila keeps stepping and jabbing from outside. Lopez windmills in with a right and misses. Avila dances around him, leading with straight rights to the body now. Lopez charges in, throwing an array of wide shots, trying to engulf Avila on the ropes. Avila plugs the body with his right and steps out to the side. Lopez crashes away with several left hooks, all caught on the arm or its underside.

    10-9 Avila

    50-44 Avila

    Round 6

Lopez is twisting his wrist and cutting his right hand into Avila's body, palms up. Effective. He's really tearing a breach in his hull; Avila isn't liking the new focus on body work and is beating a hasty retreat. Avila rallies back with a 1-2, however. Resurgent, Avila is hammering away!! Hooks and straights!! Lopez pushed to the ropes!! Clinch. They jab on their way back out to mid-range after separating.

Another round it almost looked like Ricky Lopez was going to take, only to have it snatched away.

    10-9 Avila

    60-53 Avila

    Round 7

Avila is jabbing and shuffling in and out. Lopez chops over the top with his right hand. Clinch. Avila leaps away from a Lopez overhand right and pops his jab. BIG right hand crashes over the top for Lopez. Avila shrugs it off and gets back to work. Lopez dives in and cuts a left to the body. They hold until a break is ordered. 1-2 by Avila. Lopez is backed to the ropes, blocking a forceful cross that knocks him into them. Straight flurry by Avila, finding another wind. Avila soon relents and begins to move backward again, and blocks a Lopez jab.

    10-9 Avila

    70-62 Avila

    Round 8

Avila is able to catch Lopez swinging in high with a short left hook. Lopez shakes it off and keeps coming. Again he's caught, and down!!! Lopez rises, but too quickly. He seems a bit unsteady. He charges in after Avila. Another big left hook, and an even bigger knockdown!! It's waved off as soon as Lopez hits the deck!!

    TKO8!!

Gutsy stuff from Ricky Lopez, kept trying for the home run all night. It was probably his best chance but wound up doing him in at the end.

I wouldn't mind seeing Avila vs. Escalante, one bit.
