Solo Boxeo: Mercito Gesta vs. Genaro Trazancos II & Eloy Perez vs. Roger Gonzalez RBR

Here we go, the co-feature should be good.

Gonzalez has been inactive for two years, but in his last two outings was in a FOTY candidate with Cornelius Lock and scored a knockdown over Yuriorkis Gamboa.

 

Round 1

Perez uses some quick jabs to keep Gonzalez at arm's length. Gonzalez has his feet wide and rotates the rear one with his lead planted, like a math compass. Perez jabs high and low, scoring by catching Gonzalez just at the very tip of his gloves. Gonzalez is unable to really get inside and do any damage despite a few attempts to lurch in with his fists flying.

Round 2

Perez leads with some blazing fast left hooks. Perez looks to have very good balance as he glides effortlessly back away from Gonzalez and keeps peppering him with long shots despite being the shorter fighter. Perez turns his head side to side to slip a few Gonzalez jabs. Perez whacks Gonzalez into the ropes with a few body shots. Perez slings quick high jabs into the face of Gonzalez. Speedy G turns over a short hook but doesn't reach the target. Gonzalez jabs and misses, then throws a hard right to the body, almost back near the kidney. Perez comes forward with a hard flurry. Gonzalez hangs back.

Round 3

Perez is throwing heavy blows, breathing hard but seeming to keep his wind. Gonzalez comes forward pressuring but is ineffective as Perez continues to beat him to the punch and get out of the way. They trade jabs in the middle of the ring, with both missing. Gonzalez then hurls himself forward windmilling at Perez but misses. Perez lands a quick hard three punch combo that sends Gonzalez skidding back to the ropes. Perez follows and explodes every few moments with double jabs and rights to the body.

Not to take anything away from Eloy's so-far flawless performance, but I was hoping Roger would look a little sharper.

He came reasonably in shape, but Speedy Gonzalez looks every bit like someone wearing 2 years of rust.

 

Round 4

Perez jabs and steps away. He keeps his upper body held back just enough that he only has to move his head minimally to avoid the jabs of the advancing Gonzalez. Simple, effective boxing. Gonzalez tries palm-slapping down at the body. Perez catches him with a stiff jab in the face. Perez comes forward, keeping his left low and his shoulder cocked to roll with Gonzalez's punches but isn't even needing to as Perez is first and last to get off.

Round 5

Both guys pose in front of each other, bobbing and weaving. Perez drives Gonzalez back with some jab feints, and Gonzalez then returns the favor. Perez suddenly throws some very hard jabs and backs Gonzalez into a corner, following up with some right crosses. Perez misses a mean looking left hook as Gonzalez skips out of the way. Perez lands a hard combo to the body. Gonzalez answers with one single right hand to the body. Perez again goes off, bombing Gonzalez back into a corner with several high, hard punches. Gonzalez fights his way back out to the middle of the ring and is warned for leading with his head. Perez keeps tattooing him at close range.

Round 6

Perez lands jabs and slips as Gonzalez uses a lot of upper body movement and directional changes to keep Perez guessing, but isn't putting together any effective offense. Three jabs in a row miss for Gonzalez and then Perez ducks his right hand. Gonzalez blocks a jab but tries to counter too quickly while his own gloves are still blinding him. Perez more or less took the round off in terms of dishing out punishment but still won on the strength of his jab.

Round 7

Gonzalez rushes in and tries to grab Perez, and winds up inadvertently bumping heads with him. The ref calls for a break and ignores Gonzalez's complaints about the butt, calling for them to continue as Gonzalez paws at his forehead. Perez slips several shots from the now very aggressive Gonzalez, but doesn't throw much back. Gonzalez blocks a few jabs and right hands and gets up on his toes, turning Perez. Good quick combo by Perez. Gonzalez steps out of the way of a couple of body shots, and then comes forward with some clubbing overhands. Gonzalez shells up and takes a Perez flurry on the arms before whipping out a hook to the body. Gonzalez lands a jab on the nose, then moves away from Perez's jab.

Gonzalez might have scraped that one out, as Perez just didn't connect a whole lot.

Ultimo round - round 8

Perez is very aggressive, coming forward with explosive combos punctuated by left hooks. Gonzalez is on the defensive, backing away with his gloves up high and trying to intercept and grab Perez when his feet fail him. Perez keeps coming at him and changing levels with his jab. HARD left hook around the glove by Perez opens up an extended combo. Gonzalez runs. Perez backs him up to the ropes, where Gonzalez defensively paws out his jab. Perez throws a 1-2 that bounces off Gonzalez's fist. HARD double lead left hook by Perez. Gonzalez is backed into a corner and keeps hopping left and right trying to escape but having the ring cut off by Perez. Eloy wants the KO...but won't get it. Gonzalez hears the final bell.

80-72 across the board for Perez. He improves to 20-0 (5)

 

Next and last is the sophomore bout of welterweight Adolfo Gonzalez, who I'm pretty sure Golden Boy Promotions poached from Fernando Vargas Entertainment. :yep

His opponent - also 1-0 and also from soCal - is Jose Leon Jr.

 

Round 1

Leon comes running out with a hard hook but it flaps up against Gonzalez's shoulder. Gonzalez stays tall and lets his right jab loose in a very tight and disciplined manner. Leon gives up on trying to get him to brawl and gets into a jabbing contest with him. Leon is merely using his jab as a feeler, trying to get inside. Gonzalez has the quicker hands and feet and is out of the pocket before Leon is in. Leon misses another sluggish hook. Leon starts putting hooks and uppercuts together indiscriminately, just hoping to land by the law of averages. Gonzalez blocks a charging combo and crouches down to make his escape as he winds up in the corner. Leon gets on top of him and starts wrestling him after a break is called, and the ref yells at him to stop.

Round 2

Both young men lunge and miss quite a bit. It's a very cautious and tactical affair, with neither committing much to their punches and both able to dodge easily as a result. Leon leaves his back exposed while lunging in with a punch and spinning himself partly around, and Gonzalez hits him with an unintentional rabbit punch. Leon tries to time him with a right hand but is getting painted with right jabs whenever he loads it up.
