Victor Pasillas vs. Andres Tapia, 6 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

Round 1

Pasillas is sticking the right jab and hooking off it at mid-range. Tapia is pushing into Pasillas with the left jab, cautious. Pasillas is leading with the right hook now and tossing left crosses in. Tapia attempts to hook with him and is caught on the left temple. Knockdown! Pasillas is dropping a few kneel-in body jabs and dribbling 1-2s off the head of Tapia. Pasillas staggers him again.

Round 2

Pasillas is pecking Tapia into a corner with his southpaw jab, doubling it up into Tapia's armpit, changing elevation once he's trapped and branding the stomach and neck. Tapia is very gun shy, holding up a high guard, ducking in and grabbing around Pasillas' waist. Pasillas is using lots of feints as he walks in, stopping a pace out and swinging his arms by his sides, rocking and shifting his weight between his feet. Tapia is just watching and waiting. Pasillas flicks a few light jabs out backhanded into Tapia's gloves. Tapia rolls his fists over each other while backing up and then lunges with a left jab. Pasillas quickly jerks and counters with a 1-2.

Round 3

Hard left hands by Pasillas, tripling up on them, cowing Tapia. Pasillas is approaching with his right arm lowered, baiting Tapia and then slicing up into the bottom of the chin with the back of his glove. Pasillas is sharpshooting, looking for another left hand, but Tapia's defenses have tightened. Pasillas is roaming to his right, pecking with the jab, varying the speed and hardness. Stiff double jab by Pasillas followed by a left cross and Tapia is backed into the ropes. Pasillas opens up, straight punches in bunches. Tapia goes to a knee. Thirty seconds remaining. Pasillas is doubling the jab and hammering with the left. BIG right hooks on the body. Tapia is shaken off balance and then dropped, but no count given by Vic Drakulich.

Saúl Rodríguez has a lot of people believing in him since he turned pro (namely, Top Rank, who snapped him up early, and Roberto Garcia, who trains him) and Ramsey Luna you may recall from his pro debut, an epic 4-rounder in which he trumped Rene Luna in what many considered a top FOTY candidate despite its brevity.

 

Yeah, and Tapia has only been stopped once before.

It was obvious from the 1st on that he wasn't making it the full six, though.

 

Saúl Rodríguez vs. Ramsey Luna, 8 rounds @ lightweight

 

Round 1

Rodríguez is jumping in with his jab, then withdrawing. Luna stabs hard at the belly with his own jab, taking his turn. So repeats the first minute. Both wary, feeling one another out. Rodríguez covers up and leans forward as Luna bashes down with a double hook behind the ear. Rodríguez scurries left. BIG right hand lead by Rodríguez, cracking loudly off Luna's skull, causing people at ringside to yell "OH!". Another one. Luna stands up to it. Rodríguez dials in another big right hand. Luna takes charge, doubling a jab and whipping in a right uppercut downstairs pressing in. Rodríguez pushes Luna off with a long authoritative jab, bearing down on his front leg. Rodríguez fakes a 1-2, keeping his arms by his sides, making Luna flinch and jump back. Mind games.

Round 2

Rodríguez falls away from a Luna 1-2, explodes from the crouch with a hook and right hand. Luna is doubling his jab on the way in and dropping the right from above. They do a bit of infighting with Luna shoving Rodríguez into a corner, messily. They skip free of each other by mutual assent, both getting butted and laced more than anything. Luna is hit with a BIG right hand downstairs set up by a Rodríguez jab up top. Another. Very loud punches. Luna hangs in there. Rodríguez circles to his left, tiptoes in, jabs, frisbees in a right and stands in the pocket. Luna digs at the ribcage with both hands, and hops out to swap jabs with Rodríguez. Jab and uppercut by Rodríguez, missing as Luna slides back. Long left hook on the body by Rodríguez, scoring. Luna fires a combination and Rodríguez crouches away, still punching back.

Round 3

Rodríguez is nailing Luna with that right hand up top, axing hard with it and transitioning smoothly into body combos. Luna is absorbing major punishment here and still responding in kind, just lacking the firepower. HUGE combination by Rodríguez, head and body, and somehow Luna just soaks it up.
