Manuel "Tino" Avila, who I've seen before (and been impressed by) is starting quick. Lead right hands crash into Gutierrez's face from halfway across the ring. Tino has crazy long arms, and moves them VERY fast. The reach and speed is looking like too much for this tomato can. Avila just whips him with one nasty whipping shot after another. Gutierrez doesn't know whether to keep his distance or rush in and clinch. He gets hit when he tries either. Gutierrez tries a slapping right hand to the body but Avila pounces off to one side (pounce is the only appropriate verb, he looked like a cat) and counters him with his long and blur-quick arms. Gutierrez is smacked into the ropes but manages to get off of them, only for Avila to keep punishing him and eventually score a KD just before the end of the round.

Gutierrez looks more embarrassed than seriously hurt.

Round 2

Tino jabs, a little wide - and then a right hand goes over Gutierrez's head as the taller but inferior fighter tries to run into a clinch. BEAUTIFUL left pull-counter hook drops Gutierrez as he tries to pin Avila to the ropes!!!!!! Gutierrez gets up and keeps trying to clinch. After a break, Avila trots across the ring and lies in wait for Gutierrez and then

BANG

Right hand on the chin, goodnight.

1-0 Roman Morales vs. 0-3-2 Danny Pantoja

Peso pluma (featherweights). 4 rounds.

 

Round 1

Pantoja didn't get the memo about being the underdog. He launches some hard right hands from outside, while circling quickly around the ring. He is drawing on the power of his Tszyu-esque rat-tail. Ooh, Morales catches him late in the round with a nice right cross. Morales has some nice combination punching, but has been keeping it in his pocket until the final minute (which, incidentally, is when he got into range and trapped Pantoja in the corner). Pantoja is retreating now. Pantoja tries a 1-2 and gets counter-jabbed hard, knocking him back into the ropes. Morales throws a hard combo to back Pantoja into the ropes, which he bounces off of and comes lurching forward with his head down. Morales takes advantage with a rabbit punch but it only grazes.

Round 2

Morales comes forward with a hard left hook and right cross combo. Morales has some quick hands when punching in combination, and does so very crisply and accurately and with stinging authority. He may be named Morales but offensively he's a lot like a very green (and southpaw..or at least ambidextrous) version of the aggressive latter-day Juan Manuel Marquez. Pantoja is just evading and trying to catch Morales coming in with overhand rights. Morales is punishing him whenever he gets near him with quick blasts of JMM-like technically perfect firepower. Pantoja tries a 1-2 to buy some time when he's backed into the ropes, just pawing with everything and trying to keep it moving. Morales is just ripping him with hard shots, mostly right hands to the jaw. These are CLEARLY hard punches, Pantoja must have a good chin.
