I'm watching the entire round of Perez-Escalante to confirm that there were indeed two knockdowns not called by the referee...because that's a little strange.

The first one comes at almost exactly the 1 minute mark, as Escalante splays his legs out coming forward and attacking. He gets caught with this wide base by Perez, who bounces back at him from the ropes with a left hook/right uppercut/left hook combo. The first hook and the uppercut collide with Escalante's forearms and chest as he ducks into them when he sees them coming. They are technically blocked, but it is the force of the blows that knocks down Escalante (although he was partially betrayed by his bad foot positioning). That is a knockdown. Bad no-call by the official. To be fair, he did have Escalante's back to him and conceivably didn't even see the punches from Perez. :conf

The second one is just ten seconds later. Perez is marching across the ring to meet Escalante, who is still trying to get his land legs and circles off to the right by the ropes before changing his mind and doubling back to his left, against the adjacent set of ropes. Perez catches up to him and lands a lunging left hook to the jaw, as Escalante shrinks back against the ropes and continues moving left. Perez then keeps the combo going, with a right uppercut again hitting Escalante in the chest before Perez tries to put on an exclamation point with one more big left hook. Escalante slips it moving backward & off the ropes and PEREZ GOES DOWN from his own momentum! Wow. That happened so fast I had to watch it a few times in slow motion. I could have sworn there was a short counter from Escalante in there that caused him to go down. Not a single punch from Escalante in that whole exchange, or dating back to before the 1st KD.

    Wow.

So Perez knocked him down twice, and never actually went down himself. The one time I thought he did, it turned out he had landed a big shot on Escalante and just threw himself off balance with the follow-up shot.

That KO punch was extraordinary. I'm in awe watching it for the umpteenth time now. If Escalante hadn't sat up so quickly it would be the highlight reel KO of the year so far, hands down.

    Who loves ya? Uncle IB!

The bad news is this is on a phone camera. The good news is that it's a halfway decent phone camera, and recording from an HDTV.

Pardon the poor lighting and low volume (on account of the sleeping Mrs. Butt), and any shakiness. It's been a long night of beer 'n' boxing.

    You're welcome.

Now, if any Spanish speakers could do ME a favor and translate the victory interview:

    [dm]xhtjmg[/dm]

My Espanol is extremely limited, but it sounds like he gives Escalante props for being a warrior (I know the word "guerrero") and also gives credit and thanks to Freddie Roach & co. He just seems like a nice, humble, and incredibly relieved & happy kid.

Announcer - Where did that right hand come from?

Perez - I've been practicing it in the gym. My last fight was over a year ago, but I've been in the gym constantly sharpening my skills.

Announcer - Let's go through the tape and tell me exactly what happened.

Perez - I was analyzing and I said to myself when I go to the body I have to follow it with a shot upstairs and I knew I would hit him because his left hand was way too low.

Announcer - You got him with the right hand, were you anticipating his right hand?

    Perez - Correct.

Announcer - Did you think he could get up from that shot?

Perez - To be honest, yes because, he is a warrior. It's was an honor to fight him.

Announcer - I understand you're training with Freddie Roach? How has that helped you?

Perez - We spar with everyone there. Japanese, Africans, Armenians, etc. There are lots of different styles and guys in different weight classes that helps.

He does a shoutout to Wildcard, friends, and family. Very nice and humble guy.

Steve Kim did a story on this guy a few days ago and it's great. Kim has been posting for a few weeks that Perez was going to beat Escalante, if not give him hell. Good call.

That was a very good post fight interview. It wasn't boring or a cliche. The reporter/announcer did a good job.
