O'Nell Negron vs. Roberto Acevedo, 6 rounds @ peso super ligero ("super lightweight"...140 lbs)

 

Round 1

Acevedo throws a pink-gloved southpaw 1-2. Negron puts his own pink gloves up to block and waits his turn. He opens up a bit too early and gets caught with a stinging right jab. Negron then backs Acevedo up with chest thumps. Negron can't seem to find his plane of attack, unsure whether he wants to dig body shots or head hunt. Instead he just fires straight out at Acevedo's chest and grazes the more experienced boxer as he moves backward. Clinch. Negron slaps Acevedo in the back with several rights. Acevedo shrugs to someone at ringside, and throws a deliberate rabbit punch while smirking. Acevedo gets a finger wagged in his face and moves to the corner, ambushing Negron as he charges in by diving low to grab him. Almost a repeat of Dawson-Hopkins here, as Negron partially climbs Acevedo. Negron follows and jabs as Acevedo just ducks and dives into one quick tie-up after another. Hard drilling 1-2 to the chest by Negron.

O'Nell Negron is arguing with his chief second and looks like he's on the verge of frustrated tears. :blood

You'd think he'd just had a streak snapped of never letting a victim escape the 1st round or something...but, that just isn't the case...

 

Round 2

Acevedo is spoiling his way through another round, drifting back behind his trail of soft right jabs and then scooting in from the ropes to tie up and rabbit punch. Negron is getting taken off his game and is reduced to wild slugging, missing some big wide hooks and taking some right needle jabs to the face. Negron tries to put Acevedo up against the ropes and dig in with hard body shots but gets nothing but elbow. Good left by Acevedo from the ropes, and then he ties Negron up and gets him in a headlock, with a rabbit punch and a kidney shot for good measure.

Round 3

Acevedo backs up, tossing his southpaw jab out long with his armpit at a right angle more often than not. As he backs up, Acevedo keeps his right arm held low. Left hand coming inside by Acevedo. NICE defense by Acevedo. Negron grabs him and lands a retaliatory rabbit punch, with some fuming power on it. Acevedo just grinds against him and keeps him tied up, then shoves him into the ropes. Good right hook by Acevedo, before grabbing and spinning Negron. Long left uppercut. Straight left lead. Acevedo is having it his way from outside, and ducking in with a turtle shell to lean against Negron when the unbeaten prospect deigns to mount an assault.

Text message poll about who has "more character":

73% of viewers think Negron.

27% think Acevedo.

In this case, we can assume that viewers are interpreting "more character" as "less of a spork-in-the-eyes style" - and they're right...but this kid for all his character is in danger of having his cherry popped here if he doesn't cool his head and figure something out.

 

Round 4

Negron is chasing, lunging with jabs. Acevedo drops his hands and uses gyrations of his stiffened plank of an upper body to dodge in several different directions, Matrix style. All in the waist. Acevedo is cuffing Negron with a couple of right jabs and hooks backing up but nothing serious. Negron falls in with some body shots but gets grabbed. Right jabs and a left to the face by Acevedo. BIG right hook by Acevedo lands flush on the temple catching Negron out of position and sending him reeling into the ropes!! They were holding him up. That should be a KD (but probably wasn't ruled one...they cut to commercial just as it happened).

Round 5

Negron hacks away at either side of Acevedo's body, slashing furiously with his left and right. He is mostly hitting the arms of Acevedo but getting a few licks in below the ribs. Counter left uppercut by Acevedo with his back to the ropes, snaps Negron's head back. More axes to the body by Negron, landing heavily from either side. Now some straight rights by Negron, finally landing to the head of Acevedo. Counter left uppercuts are still landing for Acevedo. Big straight rights by Negron, and more body shots. Rabbit punches by Negron (accidental) as Acevedo ducks and covers. Hard counters by Acevedo!

They embrace at the bell.

That was an awesome round.
