Just a thought but with Oscar and Golden boy having a very successful promotions company and their involvement with Ring magazine and the Ring belt could they possibly make a move to buy and take-over one, or all of the current major sanctioning bodies. I'm sure this has probably been discussed before but do you think Golden Boy have thought about this and would they be able to do it? If they were able to do this it could solve some of the issues we have with match-ups and having a recognised champion (and all the other sanctioning body crap we have) thoughts?
terrible idea. Having a promoter control a sanctioning body is not a good thing. It certainly wasn't any good when Don King was in bed with the WBC? Imagine the rankings. It would be nice if the organizatons maintained independence from all promoters, but we know this does not occur.
yeah i suppose if they had control of just the one body this would be a bad idea but im thinking more if eventually they ended up taken control of them all
Look at some of the horrible decisions Golden Boy has been behind (Diaz, Guzman, etc...) and imagine them in charge of everything. There would be no need to fight, all the belts would end up in the hands of GBP fighters. How about allowing ONE established boxing authority (like Nevada's) institute rules which are than adopted and respected by every state?
The problem is as long as there are fighters who are willing to pay for the right to get some bogus championship, there will always be sanctioning bodies. It's kind of like how universities. They hand out bogus degrees to ******s, and the value of having a degree becomes worth less and less. Its like you need a Masters Degree to be a janitor. Not really, but since all the other janitors paid for degrees, you need one too. Then in order to stand out, you go for the PHD, so you send the Universties more money. Of course, they know that if they keep failing people, people will not pay, so they hand out more worthless degrees to ******s. Sactioning bodies hand out championships. They keep handing out merit for sale, and people keep buying.
I kind of agree here. If not only Golden Boy, but if a couple of big promoters joined together and had agreements with TV companies. Golden Boy \ Ring Magazine could then write to boxers and ask the ones it ranked highly or were Alphabet champions to fight in eliminators for the Ring title, in exchange for giving up WBC, IBF belts etc. There would be less world champions, prompting more money and recognition for the champions and highly ranked fighters. The Super Six contest, would be just as entertaining if there was no belt at stake. Look at Dirrel versus Abraham as an example. In exchange for giving up the belts, fighters would then have the chance to fight in super four, super six, super eight competitions for big money, better exposure in exchange for getting rid of the Alphabet organisations. One champion in each weight division.
I've been saying it for a while, but instead of buying a sactioning body, they should make the Ring magazine belt a legit strap which you can actually lose in teh ring. Maybe even spruce the belt up a little so it has better fan appeal. That, along with teh rankings you can easily read in their magazines or off there website would be huge for boxing.
Having one promoter/cartel of promoters owning sanctioning bodies? Why do you think all the different organisations got set up in the first place?
We should follow Japan's example, they only reconize the WBA and WBC titles. While those 2 are the most corrupt of the major titles all the US state boxing commssions should have a meating and reconize either The Ring, IBF, WBO or IBO (since those are the 4 other most recognizable titles out there) as the only ligit and true Championship. Then hopefully the other countries would follow suit. The only problem is what if for instance the US recognizes The Ring as the true Championship but England recognizes the IBF and Russia recognizes the IBA? There would have to be alot of meatings but I'm sure it could work.
I wouldn't be in favor of making Golden Boy the last word in sanctioning boxing championships. Ring Magazine has already shown editorial favoritism to Golden Boy fighters and events since Oscar bought it. The corruption would grow as the influence does. At its best ,Ring Magazine was the most honest and unbiased source for rankings and true championships. If it could return to being just a magazine, not owned by a promotional company, then people could recognize it as an unbiased source of information and opinion, but not before.
