I am seeing alot of people blaming Jeff Lacy's struggles in the ring on his build and on too much weight lifting. I think that Lacy's slide in the ring are part pyschological from the Calzaghe fight and part physical from his injured shoulder. I dont believe they have anything to do with his build. Jeff Lacy has said on record that he does not lift weights: Do you lift weights? No. This is just natural. Okay, Herschel Walker. You're telling me you have not lifted a single weight? Well, I used to lift weights as a younger kid. Probably high school. When I used to lift weights, I'd get tendinitis. Like right before the Olympic trials (in 1996). Ever since high school, I haven't been lifting. http://www.sptimes.com/2006/02/26/Sports/Kickin__back.shtml I think this is believable if you look at several facts: Jeff Lacy has fought his entire career at 168 outside of a few fights at 175. He has not gained weight over the last ten years. He was always a muscular guy and he is just naturally built that way. You can even go back and look at old photos from the amateurs and olympics and see that he looks basically the same as he does now: This content is protected Jeff Lacy was never a slick fluid guy like Pernell Whitaker but he used to be a lot more mobile, faster with his hands and able to connect better than he is today. He had the same build he did then as he does now and didnt have the struggles getting his punches off that he does today. That is to blame on his should injuries and whatever psychological impact the Calzaghe fight left. [YT]ElDXim2vFzQ[/YT] Here is an older fight from 2004. You can see that he is still just as muscular but he is a lot more mobile and fluid that he is now.
aka Mike Tyson at 168 pounds. I like Jeff and I think people should stop being so hard on him. Other people hyped him up and he just believed in him self like any boxer would but I think he has lost his desire.
His build now is a result of his weight lifting back in the day. I haven't lifted weights for almost five years now, but I still maintain the build through simple calisthenics and other body weight exercises, plus hitting a 100-150 pound heavy bag for 10-12 rounds is an intense strength building workout. The muscle you build naturally doesn't just disappear.
I feel the same way and do not understand the hate for him. The American media is the one to blame not Lacy. They are the ones that were calling him a 168 pound Mike Tyson etc before the Calzaghe fight. Lacy is a likable guy.
I tend to agree with the majority of what you're saying El Terrible. The guy's nickname is "Left Hook" and he doesn't have one anymore. That's devastating to his fighting style and would think its mostly due to the injury. He may have been overrated, but he's definitely never been the same since the Calzaghe fight. The guy who fought Saturday night is a shell of the Pre-Calzaghe Lacy. It seems like Calzaghe shattered this guy. He has no left hook anymore and his handspeed has reduced from average (at best) to slow. If I was managing him, I'd see if I could get hime one more good payday then advise him to get out.
Thats nonsense. Muscle unless stimulated atrophies over time. Its entirely plausable to believe that Lacy doesnt lift any weights. BUT Lacy is a professional boxer so will build a degree of muscle purely because of his great genetics and because he boxes. The problem Lacy has isnt the fact that Joe ruined him or his shoulder injury, its the fact that he possess no boxing skills to speak of. The kid has a great attitude and i loved his aggresive style when he first turned pro. But that works against D and C level fighters and journeymen. Jeff was brought along so fast and none of his skills were polished and that includes his punch which for all intents and purposes is overrated. When he moved into "world class" he had absolutely nothing to offer. And truly believed he could just walk everyone down. Jeff never moves his head, has no defense, no jab, no combinations to speak of, and despite being labelled a puncher is certaintly not a concussive puncher and nor does he have the power to change a fight. Note he was doing this BEFORE he moved into world class and picked up the vacant IBF. The kid has many natural tools (good chin decent dig great attitude etc) but his trainers should be shot. I dont know what on earth they work on with him but its certainly not emulated when he gets into the ring.
when lacy fought reid he looked good knocking him down 4 times. reid had a good chin never been down before. reid was not a bum , this was lacy pre calzaghe.
Reid was shot though. The victory was very hollow. But Jeff needed way more fights and was far to green when he got put in with Lacy. He`s going to be our modern day Fernando Vargas.
