Thats a very good point, I don't tend to do lists but I've always had Duran up there somewhere based on his lightweight reign plus the good wins he had at 147 and above. But, as you say, if the aspects of his career arn't that great individually then maybe they don't deserve a top 5 ranking when added together.

I'm not sure I agree and its getting late over here but you've def. given me food for thought...:good

I think Leonard doesn't even have win the psychological battle to win the fight, he just has to make sure he doesn't lose it (which he did!!).

That was the greatest win ever? How? He beat Ray when Ray was fighting his 2nd title fight at welterweight and Duran near his 70th fight. And you say Duran was smaller, Duran had fought at 154 pounds in Sept of 1978, 2 years before this fight. How was Duran's performance so great, he did what he always did when he won, yet here he could not stop Ray. Then take into account Ray beating Duran in the rematch and making Duran quit. The excuses for Duran are endless, but the excuses for Ray for the first fight are not even recognized. Yet inexperience was something we know Ray was. This is what I mean about learning the sport. If you do not study boxing thorougly and know the facts, then why comment and act like you are an expert. Everything you say is more like a guy who watches ESPN then someone who knows boxing.

Roy Jones won his fights usually by wide margins also. Duran fought his fight and lost a close fight with Ray, then loses the rematch.

yes Mosley would have beaten those two guys. Cervantes beat up Dejesus who Mosley would have stopped probably in the late rounds. And Buchanan beating Mosley? Are you kidding me Dynamita?

I never said Mosley beats Duran. That fight looks like Leonard/Duran 1. But Buchanan? Good HOF fighter, but no ATG.

Do not worry about educating me about boxing, you seem to need some knowledge on the sport and styles and techniques.

That is all you can mention is some sentence I typed which does make me sound idiotic, but when it comes to Duran and Leonard and Hearns, the topics of your post, you fail to mention anything which backs up your claim. Leads me to believe you do not know much about the topic.

Nah..there were a few rounds which, while closely contested, were simply good, spirited rounds as opposed to being truly great. It was still a very good fight, with a few rounds to store away in the time capsule, but it did have a few lulls, and an element of sameness to it that would cause me to rate a fair number of fights ahead of it.

As I said in Classic, Leonard-Hearns 1 was intriguing because of the shifts of momentum, and the style reversal that took place in the fight. And there were enough punches landed throughout the fight that it was never completely devoid of action at any point. There have been many better action fights, but the concensus at the time was that, in terms of living up to the spectacle, it did a pretty good job of it..which was tough to do, given the build-up that took place.

I can still remember that fight. I saw Hearns outpunching Leonard in every round but not doing any damage and I thought Leonard gave him too much respect by not pressing much harder. I thought the ref made a bad decision in stopping the fight coz I didn't think that Hearns was truly hurt but then I was too young perhaps to know better.
