When since some like goo, Dr. Z and Russell wish to compare current fighters with those of time past this topic becomes important.

Did I just root out three 'roid fans?

I'm picturing Rocky on the juice as being somewhat like the villain from Demon Knight who threw one punch, which went completely through the other guy's face and out the back of his head

Modern fighters gain an awful lot from enhancers of all kinds. I always take this in to account when judging fighters achievements and abilities.

Why no Tyson he certainly looks like he did and Ali and his weight gain from light heavy weight or are they both sacred cows.

I read that Tyson was put on a steroid program as a youngster when he was coming up. The same thing was done with football legend Diego Maradona.

No, not sacred cows to me.

Tyson might have taken steroids but he was a freak. Built huge at 12 years old and before he'd even begun boxing. So that's not due to steroids in my opinion. Unless 'roid use was widespread among dysfunctional Brownsville 11 year-olds in the late 70s.

I reckon Tyson likely took 'roids after he started getting beat up, and with the other guys around clealy taking them in the 1990s, getting stronger than him.
I think the 90s is where it really caught like wild fire.

Ali, no, I dont believe he used steroids. He was 178 pounds at 18 years, 195 at 20 years, 205 at 21 years. That's normal growth.

When comparing heavyweights from different eras, I always liked to take an educated guess on the what size a fighter from a past era would be if he had lived in the times of the fighter from a latter time to whom he was being compared. This has been accentuated in modern times due to the widespread use of steroids.

When I liked to add a few pounds to the fighter from the past, I was asked questions like whether I thought that the human race had hyper-evolved. So, it is good to see that someone is actually bringing up this topic and that so many has come to realise the impact of drugs and other modern advances on the muscular size of a boxer.

My point is, if we are going to compare Joe Louis to Lennox Lewis we must give (in our minds) old Joe access to the same facilities which Lennox had. Or, think how Lennox would be if he only had what Louis had. Anything else would be unfair. I mean, you just cannot say that Joe Louis was 200 lbs and Lennox Louis was 250 lbs and leave it at that.

Actually, the drug issue cannot be really discussed and appreciated in a few lines. I have my own take on the topic. But it will involve a long post. Maybe, if I can find the time.

Sonny's Jab, good reply on Ali to the allegation made against him by Punchy. Natural growth with age.

I believe Tyson might not have used before prison. And I believe it even more likely that he didn't use before the Douglas defeat.
Of course, it could be true that he was always using. But I dont think it was as widespread in heavyweight boxing in the 80s as in the 90s.
And Tyson was such a natural freak anyway he was probably less likely to have been attracted to the steroids as were more normally built heavyweights.

I believe he was usng in later years, simply because he knew everyone else was, and he'd lost the effective use of the gifts that had made him superior in the 80s. He lost weight in that first long stint in jail apparently. 1995 would have been a good time for him to start using steroids. His physique against McNeeley was exceptional !

Tyson went from 200 to 215 lbs in a few months when he was 17 or 18. Looks pretty suspicious to me but i don't know the details.
