This took me 3 days to research and make. This is NOT a representation of how good their competition was (unless you're one of those people who think size is the end all be all). On a side note, it's interesting to see how the average heavyweight was always around 6'1" upper 190s weight, and then made a 20lbs and 2 inch jump when PEDs became popularized in boxing. Makes you think.

Really makes you think for sure. In fact my brain is in overdrive right now, trying to think of how best to approach and resolve this conundrum.

Usualy when you take PED`s you look more cut, fighters didn`t look that way as much until about 10-20 years ago.

Yes but it allows lanky string beans to put on muscle they otherwise could not, which makes then perform better (barring genetic freaks like Primo Carnera).

Fat guys like Povetkin, Chrisora and Stiverne have all gotten caught with PEDs.

And Toney It should be said PEDs combined with diet allow you to be more cut (getting muscle quicker & more total bulk if wanted)
But if you eat a certain way you can just be stronger & not cut
Also some help with staying lean or not adding as much muscle as strength

Was the average challenger of the earliest HW champs really six feet?
Jeffries fought smaller guys>Johnson"s very nickname was INCLUDED the word "GIANT" though only a half inch over six
Is he not somewhat taller than most folks he fought?

Also was his average opponent really near two hundred pounds?
That would make their total size almost exactly equal to his

Its not as average as some people believe. Johnson fought a ton of giants, and alot of small people too. Johnson has a ton of 6'3"-6'4"s on his list (ex Jo Jeanette, Pat Lester, Jim McCormick, Sandy Ferguson, Jim Jeffords, plus the 6'7" Jess Willard, etc)

Jeffries fought smaller men because he barely fought at all, and he dodged black fighters (except for Johnson). Also Jeffries weight-wise was a giant (215-220lbs)

Johnson was 6 1/2, which I rounded to 6'1". My bad listing Joe, I meant Tom Cowler.

Also on your height comment, I already addressed that. Tall, lanky string beans who would never be able to put on the muscle necessary are now able to.

They can surely put on weight but I've never heard the use of PED's can give you a growth spurt?
ps Johnson was 6'.025" as measured .

Actually certain peds like a few human growth compounds (mainly MK-677) can provide a few inches of height to a person with growth plates that have not closed yet (And some unverifiable evidence that suggests growth could be seen despite closed plates). Messing with the testosterone levels during early growth can also have dramatic consequences, though usually for the worst. However the biggest reason for these super heavyweights, in my opinion, is that all these tall young men with otherwise skinny frames have gotten their hands on steroids and wonky foodstuffs from shady companies that allows them to be unnaturally bigger. There is something off putting about many of these big, lanky modern people. Its like they have all been stretched somehow, all in an effort to be larger. Its not a natural progression of things. There are obviously still large people who look and athletically perforn normal, but so many of these giants are built so strangely.
