Am I the only one who thinks that Jr. style is all wrong for Maravilla? ...

P.S I'm not saying Jr would win ... but from the style point of view... is all wrong for maravilla... too much pressure, can take a punch and is relentless

Paul Williams is all pressure, all volume, can take a punch and is utterly relentless and not to mention is a much better fighter than Chavez Jr. If he could compete with him in the first fight and utterly run through williams in the rematch, there's not much to worry about.

Yeah, one thing about Sergio is that he's fairly effective when he goes to the body, but often neglects to do so. I remember my friend yelling "GO TO THE BODY" when he had Macklin hurt, and while he ended up finishing the job just fine, he could have been more dynamic in helping himself get the stoppage.

He's talking about Julio, and while the style match-up is difficult, I'd still favor Martinez on defensive ability and accuracy. I wouldn't be as surprised as many might by a grinding Chavez victory though.

Do you have a link to the video of the conversation between Martinez and JMM, mate? I'd like to see it played out and watch if possible.

    Cheers!

If Martinez fights Chavez, then I'll be putting a fair bit on Chavez.

As soon as martinez stopped circling to his left, his left hand was open all day. That was the key adjustment.

I personally thought Martinez was fighting half assed up until he was knocked down, on purpose. Soon after that, he took control and completely dominated and stopped Macklin.

So for you UK guys, does Macklin have the front 4 or 5 teeth missing? Or were they knocked out during the fight? I could have sworn the guy had a full set of teeth before the fight started. I noticed the missing teeth when Martinez started landing some hellacious shots on his chin.

    Good thread, Bogo.

Instead of expanding a tight term like technician, why not consider "ring general"? It'd look like this: Jones is a ring general. Arguello is a ring general. Jones relied on athleticism and had subpar technique. He was highly effective. Alexis relied on near perfect technique but had subpar athleticism. He too was highly effective.

Now Maravilla is a little different. He has athleticism that is formidable though a smidgeon below Jones's level, and he has technique that is good but not at Arguello's level. His secret is strategy. This thread demonstrates how much so, and it became very obvious to me at least in Williams II.

    Maravilla is an athletic strategist.

It's a tough style to beat, but I can see someone with good speed and an eye for strategy -who also happens to have better technique- exploiting his mistakes.
