Forgive me. I've only been watching boxing for a little over 20 years now, so I don't quite understand these sanctioning bodies. This bout is being billed as a "unfication bout". How could that be? If memory serves me correctly, Gamboa beat Rojas to gain the WBA FW Interim title. Now this confuses me because I thought interim titles are only supposed to be given out when the real champ is incapacitated. However, I don't remember Chris John ever being incapacitated. Anyway, after Gamboa beat Rojas, Chis John was mysteriously promoted to Super champ. This also confuses me because I thought the whole point of the WBA having super champs was to allow unified champs more to time fight their mandos in order to help them keep their titles. To my knowledge, Chris John is not a unified champ and shouldn't be eligible to be a WBA super champ. After the WBA seemingly ingored their rules once again and made John the super champ, Gamboa was promoted from interim champ to regular champ. But how can they do this? The interim champ is basically the number 1 contender. If there is a super champ, then shouldn't Gamboa have had to fight the next highest rated WBA contender in order to become the regular champ? Finally, what happens when the regular champ is a "unfied champ" and the super champ has only one title? Does the regular champ get promoted to super champ and the super champ get demoted to regular champ? Or does the super champ get promoted to mega champ while the regular champ gets promoted to super champ? Or better yet, does the regular champ get promoted to co-super champ and then they designate a new regular champ, while also having an interim champ so that the WBA has 4 champs at 126? Someone please help out a confused boxing fan here?
There was talk of Gamboa being stripped of his belt by the WBA and instead taking the IBF belt of Salido instead (if, of course, he wins)(which he will). The alphabets are just getting ridiculous right now. And to add onto the confusion, Eduardo Escobedo is facing Francisco Cordero for the WBA interim featherweight belt very soon as well. That means if Gamboa stays the champ, the WBA will realistically have 3 champs, with none of them injured, like you said should be the case for an interim champ, and the one in the middle is unified. This is getting ****ing ridiculous.
