I'm relatively new to boxing, have only been a major fan for a few years, and although my knowledge of recent boxers and events is good I think, there are still some things I read and am unsure about. Hope you guys in here can help. - what is the "Philly Shell"? I know this is said to be James Toney's style of defence, but how is it different to just using shoulder-rolls? Who else uses or has used the Philly Shell? (any tips for good examples of this style being used in fights would be much appreciated) - who other than Roger and Floyd Mayweather Jr has ever used the shoulder-roll as their main defensive strategy? To be honest, I'm pretty fascinated with this move. I tried it in the gym and was immediately beaten to a pulp! I watch them do this on film, but in reality I can't work out how keeping your arms there stops headshots landing, it's pretty amazing to me. Has this technique always been used in boxing or is it relatively new? (any tips for good examples of this style being used in fights would be much appreciated) - do you think a Shell or a roll technique is a better defence than a peek-a-boo style guard, or someone who uses foot speed and head movement to avoid attacks rather than defend against them? Cheers :bbb
It would be a lot easier to show you rather than to write it out, but I'll give it a shot. It's basically just a different name for a shoulder roll really. You place your left tucked in and across your mid-section for protection to the body, with the elbow out to avoid shots to the side of the body. You must always keep your shoulder high and your chin tucked against it to avoid the cleaner shots, especially to the chin. You'd tuck the right arm in against your chin in the meantime. When a punch is thrown, say a straight right, you'd turn and roll it off of your left shoulder, which would leave you in perfect position to roll right back with a right uppercut or straight right. More to come later.
nicolino loche.youtube him. Argentine light welter uses a very solid shoulder roll technique. philly shell is the hand positioning, shoulder rolls are the motions.
