Ia agree with most of your post. Tarver deserves respect though, even if it was a faded Jones.

Anyways remeber in the third fight where we seen a little flash of the old Jones when he backed Tarver up against the ropes landed an uppercut to the head and some brutal body shots that hurt Tarver badly.....but then he backed off....that's when I knew he was completely finished. Old Jones would have finished the fight right there.

remeber him for his great skills, his great fights, his multi weight achievments, brining real excitment to the sport.

someone at this moment in time needs to fool him into somehow seeing mcclenan with out knowing hes going, and then when he see geralds state,he will retire.

Good post. This was the first time since his dq loss that things weren't going his way. He really had to dig deep and in the closing rounds he did do that. He won the fight very closely. He should have retired at this point. Bar the odd performance, his career since has been ****. Other than trinidad, lacey and sheika he has fought like a gun shy old man.

In regards to his chin, Jones got tagged on several occasions during his career, including flush punches from Ruiz the heavyweight, which lets remember had already floored Evander Holyfield, which in turn took flush shots from Mike Tyson.

The only thing you can be certain of, it's that once a fighter gets knocked out, his punch resistance is never the same as before. That applies to almost everyone in every possible weight class, especially when they are higher up in age. Jones got tagged by a lucky "Tarver" home run punch and it went downhill for his punch resistance from that point on. That's it, that's all !!

You don't need to be a supposedly chin checker to understand that stuff...

I think I had it even going into the 11th, and I gave Jones the last 2 rounds. Close but clear win for Jones in my opinion.

I think Jones showed a lot of heart just by losing all the weight and taking that fight when he did. Not only did he lose all that weight, but he was already 35 and his best years were behind him (though he was so damn good and still better than most anyone else it was hard to pinpoint) and he didnt give himself enough time to get his stregnth back. Ruiz should have been it imo, but he gave it everything he had in the Tarver fight despite being draned, and still beat him. Jones has said himself, going up to fight Ruiz was a great accomplishment for him personally, and coming back down and getting KOs was the trade off. He also doesnt regret it, nor should he imo. He one one of the greatest ever.

Jones has solid punch resistance, but the punches that have knocked him out were ones that he didn't see. It's kind of apples and oranges. I think the first KO from Tarver was completely legit, and after that he became gunshy and more prone to getting hit, and ultimately KO'd.

It's easy to kick Jones when he's down & shot now but in his prime he was as close to unbeatable as it gets. Now he's a shell of his former glory and can't pull the trigger anymore. It's sad to see how far he has fallen as he used to be one of the PFP best for years. Here's what I wrote down like a year ago when I first scored the fight:

    Jones: 1,3,4,5,9,11,12
    Tarver: 2,7,8,10

    Even- 10

    Winner: RJJ 7-4-1 116-113

"Very underrated fight. Even here Jones doesn't display the dazzling,lightning-quick footspeed of his prime. Straights and right hooks to the body got him through this test. He dug deep with combos in the last 2 rounds and showed his heart every minute. Last time I saw this I thought Tarver could've won but a lot of those punches in combos were blocked rope-a-dope style. This fight shows you how good Roy was even post-Ruiz but it is his last great win"

BTW, I haven't scored the fight since so I may not make the same scorecard I did then.
