It starts around 6:20 of this tape. "Marciano, he continuosly threw punches with all the force, he had no science, no ability to do anything other than throw it like he was throwing a baseball." [YT]kmA3Nu_AxEA[/YT]
Walcott did also say some complimentary and indeed informative things about Marciano. I think that in the context of the question asked (eg comparing him to Joe Louis) it is fair.
Good post.....great to hear Curt Gowdy & Don Dunphy again on the NBC program. Now all we get is the Max Kellerman's and ESPN talking heads. Also, note how much Cassius Clay looks like Jersey Joe when Walcott is fighting at his best.
What Marciano did was not taught, it was what he naturally did in a boxing environment. As a rule, we usually attack things that we do not understand. Much of Marciano's style that Walcott held in contempt was later replaced with respect after walking into the Rock.
No, believe it or not people sometimes just run into things and think others may find them interesting, doing so without an agenda. I found it a striking remark, even given the context of the larger conversation. I have nothing against Marciano and many can vouch for that.
Jersey Joe is my favorite fighter. He did not really try to come across that way on marciano, he respects marciano alot, considers him a great fighter. He also has said that Marciano is very hard to hit cleanly with a punch making him deceptive, and that he hit harder than joe louis.
I was expecting some dirt from that thread title, but he just seemed to be making a reasonable assesment of Marciano & Louis. Why'd Curt have to bring up Marciano anyhow, he beat em' both.
Walcott called Marciano a bum and said he'd retire from boxign if Rocky beat him. To say Walcott did not say some harsh things about Marciano is false.
This content is protected This is a PICTURE perfect Right hand!!, The Rock looks like Roger Clemens in that follow thru. Wallcot speaks the truth.
