  1. This is a fasinating debate, i wonder who is right. Is long distance running beneficial for a boxer or a waste of time ? Interesting.

2 time featherweight champion Jorge Paez was a clown. As in the circus kind.
About road work. I'm not an expert, but I like to read up on things like this. From what I understand sprinting builds stamia better than long runs. To build endurance a lot of runners do what's called fartlek or speed play. Basicaly going faster or slower for short distances or times. I think long runs may be best for weight loss. There's a new school of thought that says too much running is bad for you and can lead to hart problems. Sometimes I think it's just tridition that has boxers waking up at 5am to run 5-10 miles.

The scientific literature shows that long distance running isn't even the best way to improve fitness for a long distance runner, so I don't know how people can believe it's important for boxing fitness. Fitness is very specific, you're not going to get in shape for a cycling race by running and you're not going to get in shape for a marathon by cycling. When you train you also train where the blood flows to and there is a large neural learning component that makes you more efficient in the movements you train. Running is nothing like boxing unless you're doing repeat sprints and targeting the glycolytic energy system. Even then it is nowhere near as useful as throwing combinations on a heavy bag. Sport specificity and bioenergetic specificity. Roadwork is old school BS, boxing dogma passed down through the generations.

I sparred with Castro before he fought Roy Jones Jr in 1992...he didnt appear so when watching him fight but being in the ring with him I can tell you he was a really tricky and cagey guy with GOOD power!

Everything is good, SugarShane, how about with you?? Yea, Castro, U know what I remember? Remember when he suckered John David Jackson into that right hand that KO'd him? He tried that with me several times in the sparring session and I thought it was a slick and smart move...a couple years later he got John David with it...

You got me to watch it on youtube.

I saw Castro drop Jackson with a right for the 3rd time to stop the fight due to 3 KD rule, however, it looks like it was the left hook that bought the house down for Jackson.

You have good information, I used to take exercise bio classes in undergrad, so what you are saying makes sense. Now if you weren't such a dick about the info and coming in holier than though attitude, people might listen. People are coming in from a lot of different education levels, and the information you are citing is still being constantly researched. There still isn't an ultimate training method and the literature and will change in another 5-10 years. It all depends on the results you are trying to get. Considering there are a lot of different styles in boxing, some fighters are going to benefit more training and fighting in quick bursts, where as some fights take their time and fight at a more consistent pace which might require different training methods.

What Castro did in sparring and PERFECTLY in the fight was pretend he got hurt with a shot..he backed into the ropes and when JDJ rushed in to finish him, BOOM...

This is true, road work is more of a mental thing for most boxers.

I don't know why more fighters don't play possum, the only guy who would do it semi-regularly that I can think of is Toney. Maybe not wanting to influence judges the wrong way?
